When and why was the "Thanks" button changed to "Like" at the bottom of our individual posts? I much prefer "Thanks" because that is exactly what I intend to do when I opt to press that button....

 

I just noticed it recently Jon, I totally agree with you, I assume we didn't want to confuse the millennials with an unfamiliar button.

Well, either way, it's a way to indicate a good/useful/enjoyable posting...or to express agreement

IIRC when the "thanks" was introduced there was some discussion about whether to have thanks or like.

 

I THANK a member for making a useful or informative post. I don't necessarily LIKE what has been written. The two concepts are not synonomous, they are mutually exclusive.

KMA, there are times I LIKE LIKE, or a THANKS when needed. I would really LIKE some emojis too for those times when my second language kicks in and some up tight people don't understand sarcasm or humor :-)

 

Well, yes, you're correct, of course. But, IMO, the salient point is this: a person has posted something that the reader found useful or enjoyable, or is appreciative of; a positive reaction has been evoked.

I do Not do social media, so this attempt to make JF look more like FB is completely wasted on me. Not only that, I don't like it!

Just this morning I got a Notification that someone has "tagged" one of my posts.
What the BLEEP does that mean??!
At first I thought I had a Private Message from that member, but No! Not even notice that someone "Liked" my post. What's with this?

For me the issue was the word "useful". A lot of the posts that I thought were pretty funny or otherwise enjoyed (eg photos) and deserved a pat were not useful at all, so I was conflicted at the concept of "thanks for this useful post". If the word "useful" was taken out it would have solved my moral dilemma. At the moment, if I had to choose out of "Like" or "Thanks for this useful post", I'd probably go with "Like", mainly because I dont do a lot of work on my cars so I have less occasion to find a post "useful" than I do to enjoy it.

 

Switching "Like" and "Thanks" is a bad idea. Like implies "I agree" while "Thanks" implies "You helped me with your post". Hence, there is such phenomena as like farming but not thanks farming.

I recommend switching back to "Thanks" or even better make it explicit in "Helpful post".

 

I think this means someone is interested in you in "that special way" and want to tap/tag you, if you know what I mean ...

(just kidding, it means they used @you in a post)

 

I have to agree that the whole "like" thing is offensive. But why? Glad you asked...so in no particular order...

• I don't like being lumped in with those who think I care whether they like what I post.
• Usually if there is a "like" there is an option for "don't like" so conceptually the single button does not cover the metaphor's intent.
• The button change has already modified my behavior as described by others above. I have opted to not click the button simply because the implied meaning is not accurately conveying my intent. I want to sincerely say thank you to the poster, not give the button click equivalent of a participation trophy.
• It is obvious this site is not focusing on its core demographic which is considerably more mature and thoughtful than the group a "like" button targets. I am definitely offended by that.
• It really pisses me off to think that all my "thanks" have now been converted to "likes" even though that was not my intent. Its the equivalent of changing the text on a voting ballot after I cast my votes.

Even if you do like what I posted above, please show some solidarity and refrain from clicking the sh!tty "like" button. From this point forward I won't do it just on principal.
