Default Suggestion: Reputation

First of all, I have an inquiry; is there a set system for rank? Or is there even a rank system?

That leads to my suggestion. If there isn't a rank system, then imply one for the members. If there's one in place, then let it work based on reputation.

I know there a handful of well established members here, professionals, that have that rank already. This suggestion comes from another forum I'm a member of (not cars). A member has to build up reputation in order to gain promotions.

Right next to the avatar lies a link with the option to leave rep and the reason why its left. That stimulates members to help. Makes the community more active. Though it isn't just on rep alone, but amount of posts as well. Example, new members have no real rank. Just a member. Next promotion comes after you've received 3 reps and have posted 50 posts. Next at 50 reps and 500 posts, etc.

I'm not sure own many visit this forum a day, so maybe on here those numbers wouldn't be as high. Or not apply the post rule, just reps.

All I'm saying if members of any rank get some rep for helping, it makes them keep helping for that incentive. Aside from simply being a kind helping person. Even for well established members, it's a way for other members to see how much that particular member has contributed to the forum.

I also meditated about reps but one of the forums in which I have been a member of cancelled the reps due to abuse .

I have seen a rep system nearly destroy a good forum. Not a fan.

Hi Estunum.....many thanks for your enquiry about reputations.
In answer to your question, yes, the function is available but not used to date.
As answered before it can be open to abuse and has been on other forums. Generally, most of us know who the regular / reliable and knowledgable members on here are and forward their details to any newbies and give thanks / appreciation in that way.
Its worked well to date and I see no reason to change at present.

It is something we can keep an eye on and possibly revisit at some stage though.

Thanks for your valued input

How can it be abused? I mean, I can think of endless reasons, I'd just like to hear your input. Again, in reference to another forum I'm part of, the rep system has been used for a while and abuse hasn't been an issue yet.

How can it be abused? Hmm, let's see.. Are you taking into consideration the human element of leaving negative or positive feedback based on personality conflicts rather than pure facts?
What filter would be in place if I think you are a monumental ***** while others think you are helpful? Perhaps there is more maintenance required which equals additional costs. Are you considering the amount of extra time that the moderators may have to put into such a system. I doubt very seriously if its 100% automated. What about people receiving unjustified negative rep feedback etc. Such a concern would generate more emails to the administrators having to reverse rep feedback or simply play mediator on petty complaints.

Seems this sytem is working that we have, why change it? I guess some people feel empowered with a Superman cape next to their name after 1,000 posts. This is a helpful, friendly, informative site...if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I know that I want my superman cape and now I'm one post closer

I'm good with the status quo but it makes me no difference as I'm a Jag newbie anyways.

The land rover forums I'm on we just know who to listen to and the more experienced members correct those that are putting out bad info.

Hogleg and armyjag both make good points IMO.....These systems can and are open to abuse, no doubt about it.

Armyjag put it well when he said
" we just know who to listen to and the more experienced members correct those that are putting out bad info."

This tends to be the way we work here to date. It has been, and is a friendly site with helpful knowledgable members and great techs. Any trouble makers are dealt with swiftly to keep it that way and newbies are usually treated with tlc along with pointers as and when required.

I think the moral so far is....if its not broken lets not fix it.

Its certainly something we can view and revisit if necessary at some later point.

friends, members, countrymen.......lol, just kidding
Dunno bout the diplomat, just try to be as open minded as possible and you know what they say....never say never.

Lastly, I'd never want to shoot anyone down for any ideas to help improve the site in any way shape or form as it might stifle suggestions in future.

One more thing.....

I am NOT a diplomat
