Trouble logging in
Why do I have so much trouble logging in? I have a PM, so I log in as usual and get the Welcome dickc message, then click on the PM, and then I get the big message to log in, log in on that and it just keeps coming up, finally shut it off and try again, and again and sometimes it finally 'catches'!
Why so much secrecy, this isn't Fort Knox.

Dick - will pass your issue on to the staff for review/resolution. I have not had any issues once logged in viewing PM's, etc. May I ask what browser you are using - IE; Firefox, Chrome, etc as this may be something with the browser settings as this may help them in identifying possible cause.

"Remember me" has never worked for me.
I tried it as a remedy for losing my session between windows. The login just gets "lost" at some point. This will happen over a period of minutes or hours. Not days.
Simply put, I cannot open a browser window, login and stay logged in. The server just decides to forget.

Hmmm, perhaps it can't remember as far back as IE6. LOL
I know that this will be a grandmother egg sucking post but...
Check that your 'time zone' is correctly set, date, time, time zone.
Then, Tools/Internet Options/Privacy/Advanced and check that both 'Allow 1st party cookies and Allow 3rd party cookies are checked.
My problem is that I forget to log out!

You must be joking
The system clock is synchronised to three tier one NTP servers running atomic clock hardware and slaved from the US Naval Observatory. So, if anyone's time is wrong, it isn't at this end.
1st party cookies allowed but don't see any reason to allow 3rd party cookies as I have no interest in the 3rd parties.
By definition, JF should not be able to set or access 3rd party cookies. This is consistent with the relevant HTTP standards, and with real life browser behaviour absent cross site scripting exploits or frame sniffing.
If 3rd party cookies were really required, that would be at odds with being able to maintain a login for some period of time before being forgotten. It either works or it doesn't.

Firstly I've merged the two very similar threads.
Secondly in light of this reported issue I have conducted a little experiment.
Using Internet Explorer 9 as a browser, with standard settings, I have remained LOGGED IN to the forum for a continuous period of 1 week.
This includes:
Full closure and re start of the browser.
Complete shut down of the PC.
Partial sleep mode.
Un plugged + Batt out.
Un planned for 6 hour power cut.
Leaving the PC on for 24 hours with browser open.
Jumping between forum sections etc.
In all instances, when I have re-opened the browser or re-activated the PC and opened the browser.
I have not once been logged out, nor have I been asked to re-enter session details.
Therefore, I conclude that the reported problem must be a 'Local Settings' issue rather than a forum problem.
If someone is having an unforseen log out problem, please post details, including browser and browser settings and we will try to help you through it. (W/O details it is always tricky)
All the best,
