Default Restricted performance, no DTCs

Hi, this is my first post here and I just became a 99 xj8 vanden plas owner tuesday. The guy I bought it from said it was saying restricted performance and his mechanic said it needed a fuel filter. I was going to install one, but it was shiny as though it had been recently replaced. It drove the 80 miles home without any problems. Then my wife drove it and it started displaying "restricted performance" and it threw a few DTCs.

I scanned the car and it had codes P0328 (fixed, had water in connector), IGN primary/secondary G ckt (removed 3rd coil on the LH side and checked for moisture; I also added dielectric grease and swapped this coil with the back one on the same side); P0307 (see previous code); P1316 (misfiring so bad it could damage catalysts...it didnt).

Is it correct that bank 1 is the RH side and it is numbered 1-4, and bank 2 is on the LH side and numbered 1-4 (7-8 really)?

I have put 70 miles on the car today and it will not throw any more DTCs, only "restricted performance". Sometimes it will actually accelerate but more weakly than usual and other times it will buck like crazy while slowing down and sometimes bark the rear tires. Does anyone have any tips for me? My scanner is currently only able to do domestic and asian cars. It is a snap on mt2500, so I suppose I could pick up some european cartridges somewhere. Let me know what you guys think!

Check out the information on restricted performance on the XK8 FAQ sticky:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=29800

And, yes, Jaguar chose to designate the cylinders 1(or A)-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4 on the right, 2(or B)-1, etc. on the left but then you get to the DTC's and they report as cylinder numbers 1 through 8. Here is a link to that information:

Monitor mass air flow sensor and see what its doing. This is also a common to you car problem with what your describing. And you probobly have codes but theyre jag specific and your gonna need something will pull them either the right software in yours or ids at the dealer

OK p0328 came back, so should I replace the sensor? Is this a common cause of the "restricted performance" error? It looks hella easy to change. Is this a fairly cheap part or should I look into swapping on a ford one? Thanks

The knock sensor is an occasional problem, sometimes due to water/coolant leak issues.

It would be great if there was a replacement Ford part number. There are many parts that will interchange with Ford/Lincoln LS part numbers. With a SnapOn reader I assume you are a professional.

What we need is someone to take on the task of managing a list. Any volunteers?

yes it will give you restricted performance. and you can change it wihtout taking off the intake. it takes about 2 minutes with a small telescoping magnet. take a pair of diagonal cutters and snip the little piece of plastic that keeps it from coming straight up on the intake. work the new connector down and towards the t stat and slid the new sensor on the stud with the magnet again. tighten to spec DO NOT over tighten

Default Similar Issue Recently

Last week I posted some questions regarding the same issue. After 135 dollars at the dealer they stated I needed to replace the throttle body. So, I got a second opinion. I found a guy who used to work at the dealer in Michigan and now owns a private shop here in Monterey, CA (Hartzel Automotive). He ran the codes (50 bucks) and ended up replacing the throttle actuator relay and adjusted the throttle cable back to within limits. The part number is LJA-6703AA (Relay JA 12V 30A W/DIODE) and it costs $15. If you look at the S514 TSB it shows a good description of how the cable should look too. Dealer was going to charge $2750 to replace a "bad" throttle with them saying $2400 was for the part. Hartzel saved me about $2600. So, if you are ever in the Monterey area and have an issue Barry Hartzel has about 30yrs experience on these things. For $15 it might be worth it. If you need a location for the Fuse Box it is under the hood "Control Module enclosure Relays (LHD)," it is brown and is the Throttle Motor Power Relay

Damn! Thats a long road to go down just to come to a knock sensor. The P0328 code is also ghost-like in my situation. Luckily it showed up when I "needed" it to. Is the part expensive? There are no jag dealers in my area so I would have to call it in or get it online. I am interested in seeing if the lincoln LS knock sensors are a direct swap. Thanks so far for the great posts. I really like how this car rides too, btw.

The sensor is about $120.00 +/- a few. First check if one of the wires are not chafing against the frame or a bolt causing it to give you a false reading.

I think you guys should know I just ordered another knock sensor (airtex part number 5s5619) for $36 shipped new. Of course, once it gets here I will know 100% that its the right one, but it think it will be teh win.

OK I got the new Airtex sensor today and the wires were like 6 inches or so longer than the original sensor, but they tucked away nicely. No more restricted performance for me! I think the application for the knock sensor is for a 99 xk8. Thanks for all your replies.
