MK V oils??
Hi guys.. Having bought my trusty MK V 3 1/2 I figure its time for a complete oil drop.. the previous owner didn't do a lot of miles & I don't know the age of the oils, so better to be safe than sorry..
I have read a bit on engine oils & there's a few internet sites declaring "new" oils are lacking a few ingredients from what would of been originally used in the car and this could cause premature wear.. What grade of oil is everyone using in these older components please? Any suggestions would be appreciated
cheers

On the inner fender should be a list of the fluids/oils used in that specific model. Then you would cross these with the new modern oils/fluids. Before using modern greases, try to clean all the old grease out as they usually do not mix and leave a mess. Old Jags usually used a 20w/50 engine oil and diffs used 90w and the stick tranny used 30w. Autobox was type A. Check the plate and cross from there.

There is truth to the statement that some modern oils lack in critical additives required by older engines, specifically zinc and phosporus.
The simplest work around is to use oils that are dual rated for both gasoline and diesel engines and carry the API CJ4 classification.

Modern multigrade oils weren't around when the Mark V came out. It was only in production for 2 years, BTW.
Here is a supplier that might have the right stuff -
