Default Coil / Temp / Aux Carb Wiring Question

Morning all,

Hope you can help - am at the point of wiring up a new Coil etc, and I have loose wires in my engine bay (all black) and I have no reference photos of what its supposed to look like, wiring diagram on my wall is no help as it shows colors...

Can you post photos of your wiring so i can figure out this mess i am tring to bring back to life?

I will post a photo of what i have now so you can share in my misery

Are you referring to the ignition coil or the starting carb coil ? Or Both ?

I took these Photos at a recent British Wheels On The Green Car show here in AZ last October... so I has a tiny clue as to what goes where.

the green wire should connect to the Otter switch, to the single spade connector on top of the thermostat housing that looks like a triangle in the photo.

The Otter switch is what tells the auxiliary starting carb to choke or not when starting cold engine.

So I think this is how it should go:
One side of the coil = Aux Carb
Aux Carb = Themostatic something
Other side of Coil = Distributor

but beyond that - am lost

You're going to need a multi-metre to check for continuity and voltage, do have one and know how to use it ?
Do you know what continuity means ?

Thanks for responding - yes I own a multimeter and yes I understand continuity, tell me what to do coach.

For the Aux carb there are two wires.
One wire is live and goes from the switch on the dash to the carb. The second wire runs from the car to the top of the "Otter" switch. When you turn on the ignition power goes to the Aux carb on wire one then out of the Aux carb via wire two to the "Otter switch where when cold the "Otter" switch creates the earth against the inlet manifold. When the "Otter" switch which is a Bimetal switch gets hot the connection is broken and the earth disconnected. Wire one is always live to the Aux carb. Many of us have connected a switch on the dash to wire one so we can control the power to the Aux carb allowing us to switch it on or off and instead of having the "otter" switch to create the earth we have run the second wire from the Aux carb direct to an earth on the inner wing.
So with your circuit tester you can find the live wire when ignition is on and check the continuity between the second wire on the Aux carb to a wire that connects to the "Otter" switch. The first live wire should be "green" and the second earth wire should be "Black" from memory.

And the coil feed wire is live with the ignition key turned on, in parallel to the otter switch feed, with the coil's outlet low tension wire should give continuity to the distributor. There's also the feed wire from the in-car temperature gauge that goes onto the temperature sensor near the carbs and this, with the ignition on, will show the gauge going onto Hot if the wire is earthed onto the engine.

Which goes to + and which to - depends if the car has been converted to Negative earth, but I expect you knew all that!

Is your car Positive ground? Mine is and here are how the wires are connected. I have an S type so the colors of the wires maybe different but they all should go to the same destinations

White with black stripe - Positive lead from coil to ground on distributer.

All white cloth covered wire (larger gauge wire) - Negative lead from coil to ignition through fuse number 3.

Green with black stripe - otter switch to starting carb

Solid Green - Starting carb to fuse box terminal 4

Green with Blue stripe - Water temp

Thank you @Felixbobcat ill do some wire cleaning and see what I have, in initial inspection all are black, but I did find a dirty cloth braid covered wire near the front.. I’ve made a test lamp so I aim to wire up, see what makes it light and now I can pull a fuse to see if it’s the correc circuit - this is amazingly helpful thanks again

My pleasure. I did a continuity test from the white wire on my coil to the fuse box and got continuity from all the white wires at the number 3 fuse. I believe the smaller of the two braided wires you see here is the one coming from the coil. It has a jumper going to number 4 fuse. you can see it in the diagram bellow.
