The only thing I can imagine, is that for some reason, ol' Charlie was trying to use a lever to work the timing chain either on to, or off of, the sprocket, perhaps even trying to adjust it a few teeth without taking everything apart, and was using the loop support as a brace for the lever .....until it sheared off.....
