Hoping to reinstall my engine in a week or so. The engine I have has no lifting eyes. I'm considering going in from the bottom. After looking at it how do you clear the engine mounts when the body is let back down? Also then how do you raise the engine back up far enough to sit back on the mounts?
I removed the engine in my S type through the top, but never again. I did notice afterwards that the motor mount Brackets are removable, held by 4 bolts each.
So if you remove the brackets, the engine will pass through on its way down or come up from the bottom without interference. Just make sure you mark all the parts with white paint marker before removal so everything goes back where it was.
Entertaining thread. Try stuffing a blown V8 with a 5 speed automatic attached into the Mark 2. Here's my project engineer assisting with the process. The twin cam heads were too wide for a bottom out approach - after a dozen or so installs/removals you no longer worry about dropping the damn thing. Elevating the back of the car definitely helps.
I would use an engine hoist to lift the front of the body up using a strap around the front cross member behind the grill with the rear wheels on the ground. Then I would slide the engine and gearbox under the car on a slightly raised platform before lowering the car body down on to the engine. Once the engine is bolted to the mounts lift the front of the car again using the engine hoist and strap on the front cross member and roll the front subframe and wheels under the car. Lower the car body again to bolt the subframe mounts in place.
I put my engine in through the top but I used the above method as you can see in the photo to attach the front subframe and remove the body off the paint rotisserie.
