There should be a way to disconnect the trans without removing it using a jack or something to hold it up. I know TOPIx says to remove it before pulling engine. Ive never tried it without pulling trans completely. I also have access to a lift so trans removal is easy.

Given my past experience with engine removal and/or transmission removal, I would think that having the car at least 6-8" off the ground, preferably using a set of strong/stable ramps, would be required, in order to have access to the bolts that secure the engine to the transmission, and also allow for some "wiggle room" to disconnect them from each other. Secondly, if it's indeed necessary to remove the engine/transmission as a unit, you'd need some room, under the car, to be able to pivot the transmission down, as you raise the engine out of the engine compartment.
