Default Exhaust to fuel tank insulation

I'm nearing the end of a complete restoration on a 66 Mk2. I have a new Bell exhaust system that is very close to the bottom of the fuel tank and occasionally hits and resonates both. I a going to see if I have anymore downward adjustment in the system but I'm thinking I don't. the tail pipes are very nicely centered vertically and horizontally in the rear apron so I am reluctant to change that.
I seem to recall a pad or insulator on the tank before restoration. Can anyone confirm that there is an insulator/pad between the exhaust and tank? If so, any suggestions on a good material. I'm thinking rubber is going to melt but maybe a synthetic rubber material?
Thanks
Craig

Craig, I don't recall my car ever having any kind of insulation between the fuel tank and exhaust. There are/were some sheet metal shields between the pipes and the floor further forward in the system. The shape and position are correct, but the material might be wrong as I made them to replace the original that had crumbled about 50 years ago.

Admittedly there is not a lot of room between the rear silencer and the fuel tank but if it is the correct system then there should be the same gap either side from tank to exhaust and exhaust to spear wheel well. I have a Double S stainless steel system (their factory is only 25 miles from me in Devon) and the rear silencers sit upright with about an inch to an inch and a half of space either side. There was no padding on my tank when I stripped the old original mild steel system out.

Rob, Craig's car is a MK2. The pipes pass underneath the axle then under the single tank, all to the left side of the car.

The system is supported at the front and towards the rear of the silencer boxes. Along the tail pipe, there's a final attachment to the inner wing. Those points should allow some possibilities for adjustment.
