Default Failed MOT

I had my 1964 Daimler MOT tested on Thursday. The test station had gliches with their computer and could not access the previous test results and the advisories. The car failed due to inoperative brake lights! But nothing else and no advisories. I have now replaced the defective switch C16062 and all is now OK. I now need to book it in for retest. It raises the question of advisories since non were recorded. I wonder if they will re-appear?

What kind of "advisories" do you have to deal with in the UK? Your switch seems an inexpensive and simple fix once you figure out what caused the light failure!

I used to download the complete MoT history on my vehicles from the VOSA (Vehicle & Operator Services Agency) website.

VOSA existed from 3 April 2003 to 31 March 2014 when it was merged with the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) to createDVSA (Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency).

When the responsibility for MoT transferred to DVSA, they either managed to lose a great deal of older vehicle histories or deliberately chose not to upload it.

Bureaucracy is an amazing thing. If I had outstanding points on my licence or owed the government money for any reason whatsoever, I could be absolutely confident they would never lose that data.

As expected, the Daimler passed its retest. The old advisories failed to come to light again. I do not have the old test paper to hand but from memory the advisories included pitted rear brake discs (I have new discs but cannot get the rear hubs off) play in the steering column ( I have a replacement and bushes and need to get to it) a little play in a steering link. I have greased and tightened the link, but suspect it is now OK since I am sure the tester will have looked for that.

OTC makes a puller that can handle the rear hubs. If you're interested, ask me and I'll give you more info.
You can also borrow (with deposit) the original Churchill tool from the Jaguar Club of North America.

The shipping costs and UK Customs inspection charges could make that a very expensive tool hire.

Yeah, I did see that after the fact.
You think there would be Jaguar club over there that would have one.

I did borrow a five arm puller from my mate at the MOT garage. That would not shift it either. I tried heating and rapid cooling to the extent that the seals? were smoking. I have since been told that this is a common problem and often the half shafts break. I have acquired replacement half shafts and will get the disc cutter out when the man fails the car!

That's unusual that, that puller didn't work.
The OTC puller that I used had finer threads then the then the Churchill tool, so that's why I went with that.
I used lots of grease on the threads, tightened the puller up as much as I could with a 3 foot torque bar and then wacked the end of the puller with a 20 pound hammer.
I continued this procedure until it broke free.

I made an adapter so the puller would fit well over the axle ends to keep from "mushrooming" the threads from the tremendous pressure and the hammering on the end of the puller.
The adapter threaded onto the end of the axle shaft.
