If data plate is missing and no title, how to ID MKII car?
I am looking at a MKII parts car and I tried to ID the car by having the guy send me a picture of the data plate off the fender well inside the engine compartment. However when I got the pictures the area where I would normally expect the data plate to be (inner fender well just to the rear and below the voltage regulator) seems to be blank.
If the car comes with no title is there any other way I can ID the car? I seem to recall that maybe behind the rear bumper there might be a smaller plate with the body ID number on it. Anyone have any ideas about how to identify the car?
BTW, there is no engine or transmission with the car either so not able to get any numbers off of them either.
Are you wanting to date the body ?? Look at different parts, Jaguar usually scribed dates on the parts by hand. I suppose this was done by installer as the parts were fitted.
Wiper motor, heater fan, things like that were usually dated by hand.
You are on the right track !
There should also be a small plate riveted in the trunk on a vertical surface below the fuel pump area.
If you remove the aluminium cover off the windscreen wiper motor there should be a date stamped on it which will give you the approximate year of manufacture of the motor.
If there is any side window glass look for the words TOUGHENED. There should be a dot just below one of the letters. If it is under the T then that is a 1. If under H it is a 5 and so on to D which is 9. If clear of the word at the end it is a 0.
That will give you a guide as to the year of manufacture. eg if you come up with a U which is 3 it means 1963. This is a reasonably accurate date of manufacture.
There is also frequently a body number attached to a small plate next to the RHS bumper mounting. Not to be confused with a similar plate next to the LHS bumper number which is the Pressed Steel number.
But the front bonnet slam panel number should be all you need.
The seller of this parts car sent me the following low res photo
He thought this said Z3656 but since that is not a proper MKII chassis number I am betting there is another number there and that the "Z" is actually a 2
Here is a similar photo of the same area on my $900 1962 car I have here in my driveway. This is chassis number 220656
Does anyone else want to guess about what the actual chassis number is on this parts car?
Look at the hood pin area.above the grille where the pin enters the lock slide. To the right of the slide ( that the pin enters ) is the car’s body number. Get out the steel wool and rub. The number will then be visible.
I have played with the photo changing the resolution and colour but the number does not pop out. You will have to get the seller to give it, as suggested, a rub with some wire wool or emery paper and the number will show. At least you know the number is there and if you have the number you can get a title on it.
Is the Z a 7 possibly making it a 17 chassis number and hence a 3.4? Otherwise is it a Z and the car is an import from somewhere else where they made the cars locally and used their own number sequence?
It looks like an early car as it has the hole on the inner wing for the air cleaner pipe which indicates it was a 3.4 or 3.8 prior to the introduction of the paper element cleaner, I think this was mid 1960.
