Default MK2 3.8 Moss Gearbox Observation Hole

Hello,

Is there supposed to be a rubber plug to cover this hole in the bell housing? I cannot find a part number if there is. can someone help?

Thanks so much.

Don't know of a plug. This is where you set the timing.

I thought that was on the lower side where there is a cover to be rotated over the hole if I recall correctly. Seems odd that there would be an open hole all of the time. That is big enough for a whole family of mice to move in :-)

just a thought because I could be wrong, but I think what is missing there is a plastic "grille", or a "vent grille" if you will. Could be a "Breather Vent hole".

The reason I say that is because I have seen Borg Warner transmissions used in Jaguar, which have a similar opening on the bell housing although on a different location, the BW66 for example, it has two similar rectangular holes at 6:00 o'clock where two vent grilles snap on.

so if you cannot find the proper part, you might get one from say, a BW66 tranny and trim it to fit.

I've seen the sliding aluminum cover on the 68-71 XJ6 but every time I looked under the bonnet at a MK or 120-150 for any type of service, I have never seen the cover. It is not in any of the build or parts books I have from 1948.
