Default Mk2 heater distribution box/center console mystery

On my Mk2, I've got a mystery regarding the chrome knob that attaches the rear portion of the center console to the heater distribution box. The hole in the top of the console that the knurled knob goes through doesn't align with the threaded post on the leading edge of the distribution box - it's about an inch or less too far to the rear. The attachment points for the box are welded threaded pads, and the center radio panel fixes the front edge of the console. The console also seems to sit a bit high where the seat bottom edges are rubbing on the top surface at the rear.

I'm starting to wonder if the console and distribution box are from different model cars?

Any insights or suggestions as to what's at the root of the misalignment would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Sounds like you've got a central console from another car, maybe an S-type, made at the same time as the Mark 2

I don't think its from an S type because that console is very different. I know the transmission tunnel on the manual cars is different than the automatics like mine. The consoles have different parts numbers, and I don't think they are interchangeable because the leading edges are very different heights.

It's a puzzle.

Dean,
How about a photo of the console and the specific area to which you are referring. That would help to pinpoint the issue.

Dean,
Since I also have an automatic Mk2, could you measure that part? I can then tell you whether it's identical to mine (or not)

Default man/auto centre consul

I have an auto, and have found that the metal part of the centre consul is the same for both. There is a round hole top nr front to accommodate the gearshift, on the auto version this is covered by the leather coverd ply.
I too had similar problems in that the hole/stud did not line up, about 1/2-3/4 out. All I did was to physically pull it back until it lined up. The hole is far larger than the stud.

Barry

What you describe is very consistent with my console.

I tried moving the heater box back about an inch, but it the stuck out of the back of the console. Maybe I need to move it back just far enough for the stud to be usable, and then screw it down.

Thanks.
