I have seen a number of threads on AJ6 or AJ16 Supercharged swaps into Series XJ6 or XJS chassis, and a couple rumors of AJ6 in MKII's, but has anyone put an AJ16 SC into a MKI/II/3.8S/420? There is a company in the UK making standalone ECU/harness arrangements so I am not concerned on the wiring. But I would like to know if anyone has had success physically fitting everything in the tighter engine bay of these cars without too much sheetmetal work?
I'm looking at finding myself a 420 so I'd like to explore some of my future options if I find the XK 4.2 a bit lacking. I previously had a SIII XJ6 which was fun, but a bit of a dog, likely due to the rather ill Borg Warner automatic.
Yes, a fellow in Victoria, BC has done it to a Mark 2. From what I understand, the front is basically a Mark 2 veneer of the outer sheet metal on the XJR subframe and inner frame. It's much more than just an engine swap, it required major fabrication.
Excellent information from everyone, looks like a bit more cutting than I am looking to do, I'll probably explore the EFI and maybe low boost turbo options for the XK if I need more power.
Mechanically driven centrifugal superchargers like Rotrex and Vortech are the most space efficient. They have other attractions in nicely compensating the fall in volumetric efficiency of the engine at high revs. Given the funds, it's the option I'd follow.
I've read some internet claims that, with good flow work on the cylinder head and porting, it's possible to obtain 300 hp from them without supercharging or too much loss of low speed flexibility.
Certainly have some options then, I would lean towards a turbo on the XK if I did forced induction to leave accessory drive room for AC. Our summers certainly aren't getting any cooler. 30 days over 90 this year...
