aerodinamically-speaking, the tall section goes towards the rear and the low section towards the front.
in practice, the tall section is for the driver to see the turn signals are flashing, but if that was not neccesary, then the aerodynamics prevail, because why would you create a drag-inducing element by placing the tall section facing forward??

These are not turn signals, they are side lights, so on all the time when the lights are turned on. The turn signal light is down the bottom of the front wings. So these tell-tales are so you can see if a bulb has blown or not. I installed mine so the slope faced forward. The idea is the thing acts like a prism, so the rear, near-vertical face lights up.
a friend in Tennessee had them wired as Turn Signals, so they flashed with the bottom signals too, but regardless, the principle is the same, aerodynamically oriented or drag oriented.
have I seen them Jon? I helped to hold them in place one time, I love the darned things, and I wonder why the S type did not have them. Still waiting for the cam cover pics!!
I grew up with an XK140 and a MKII and they both were installed as pictured. I have shown cars throughout the United States and installed all mine this way. I agree with the aerodynamics, but on some models these let you know where the front corners of the car were. some did blink. To me, if you can see the marker plainly from the driver's seat at night, it is installed correctly. The JCNA, the Concours regulators for the States approve mounting either way, as there are so many arguments on the subject. All books from England actually show the original cars with the telltales mounted this way. Some MKIIs had white ones.
See this, use a rag in the lens hole in case you drop it, with out the rag, it is impossible to fish the clip out if you drop it, and you will.
Fit the clip on the lens first and make sure it does just that before attempting to install it.
Use a little clear silicon to seal the marker.
