1994 XJS Nervous Newbie
From the first time as a child I saw a Jag (1969) I have wanted to own one. Last week I finally bought a 1994 XJS Convertible for $4000 CDN. I love this car!! All thought if has a rust spot (passenger side front fender around the badge), cracks in the drivers side tail light lenses and a few quirks(mostly electrical) the remainder is in great shape. I have very limited mechanical experience, but I hope to patiently pick away at these issues with knowledge from the forum and make this car even more fantastic.
Thanks for having this great knowledge base.

Congrats on getting the XJS.....great choice, great car.
A little bit of nervousness is normal as these cars do have some quirks....but don't be too worried. Many here are happy to help you and everyone who has worked thru the problems agrees that an XJS is worth the effort.
Cheers

Welcome from a bit west of you. I'm in Victoria, BC.
I have a '92 XJS and I always pass on to any new Jag owner this advice I got upon buying my first Jag back in '71.
"The thing is, Jaguar owners are different from other car owners.
Owners of other cars want to get in, turn the key and go. They know that it's time to put gas in because a little light came on telling them to. They usually know where to put the gas nozzle but don't want to know, before hand, how much gas they expect to be buying.
Before going for a drive, a Jaguar owner will first walk around their car. They look at the tire pressure and notice any burned bulbs. They open the hood, check the belts and fluid levels. They will tighten any loose nut they find on the spot. Then they invariably pull out a rag and dust off any fingerprints. Then, and only then will they open the door and sit in their car.
This involvement with their cars, on a personal level, is what makes a Jaguar owner different from owners of other cars.
Jaguar owners own, and have read, not only the owners manual but the maintenance manual for their cars. The know which bolts are metric and which are SAE. They know the difference between metric and SAE.
A Jaguar owner wants to fiddle and play with his car. He wants to feel that he is owning and driving a piece of machinery. And he knows that machinery will break if not properly looked after.
So, if you don't own a full set of wrenches, and know which end to use, there are other great looking cars out there more suited to you.
It is not that Jaguars break down more often than any other piece of machinery it is that a Jaguar owner knows that it was his own inattention that allowed the car to break.
The owners of other cars may see their car as a means to get from home to work and back. They may see their car as their mobile office. They may see their car as a babe magnet.
A Jaguar owner is different, he sees his car as a magnificent piece of machinery."
