Welcome! I used to own a 98 XJR, If you have any questions feel free to ask. Some of the common issues with the late model XJR's are the timing chain tensioners and head gasket failure. After those things are replaced, you will have a very reliable fast machine!

What is the record for head gasket failure on the X308. XJR ?
I have just bought a 99 XJR from SSS jaguar of Kent only for the near side head gasket to blow on the way home. Firm are replacing head and gasket on the near side. Other side has been pressure tested and is being left.
Should both gaskets be replaced?

I had the same issue on my 98 XJR, I replaced both sides although the right side was blown. The original head gaskets on the R series from 98-2003 where not the best. A lot of R series owners have that common problem along with the timing chain tensioners. If you have not already replaced those, I would do that ASAP. Jaguar used plastic timing chain tensioners that commonly fail and brake off and kills the engine. Replace the tensioners with metal ones. After I replaced the head gaskets and the timing chain tensioners my XJR was reliable and a joy to drive! If you have anymore questions feel free to ask
Thank you so much for your advice. Even though I will have to pay for the other gasket I will take your advice and get both sides done.
I have already asked for 3rd/4th generation tensioners to be fitted together with check of water pump and thermostat.
Hopefully like you I will go on to enjoy what is a beautiful car without any worries.
Thanks again.
