Default 2003 X-Type 5 speed manual shift knob question

Hello all. This is my first luxury car, and I just have a question about the shifter knob. Can anyone tell me what the chrome circular piece on my shift knob is for. I have not been using it, because I couldnt figure out what it was for.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum,

Head over and ask the X guys, a pic would probably help.
