Default Aloha

My wife has been mentioning a desire to own a black Jaguar (but only one that has the signature double round headlights) for over 20 years, but I never followed through until recently.

A black 2002 X-type showed up on craigslist for a song and I couldn't resist -- with the help of research on the forums. The ad said "valve and transmission work may be necessary" which was enough to scare away anyone with an ounce of wisdom, but when I went and saw it and spoke with the seller, I learned that he was trying to be honest and was passing along what he had heard from his mechanic.

The "valve work" meant a leaky valve cover gasket (cam cover) and the transmission meant transfer case he said.

I've changed valve cover gaskets in about 20 minutes on four cylinder engines, so thought that would be a breeze on the x-type, too (oops) and this forum gave me the confidence to take on the transfer case. With success, so far.

Of course, the a/c just stopped working, and I am sure that I am in for my share of surprises and expenses, but so far, so good.

I now know that I ought to put some new shocks on (another EXTREMELY simple job on other cars I have had). YIKES on the X-type. Also, while doing the t/c I realized that the oil pan leaks. No biggie, right? Ugh.

At any rate, thank you for all the wisdom available on these forums.

I suppose when you consider your car is 13 years old it's expected to have some problems. You seem to be willing and able to address those though. You've already discovered how much help you can find here, which is the reason for this forum's existence.

Welcome from ElinorB.

You know Elinor, I think I wasn't trying to come across as negatively as I did.

This was practically a gift horse, and it is a beautiful car!

Of course it has issues, which is why I got it so reasonably.

I think what I was trying to convey is that things I expected not to be too challenging would be next to impossible without this forum. And are for many people. Hence the forum.

Welcome to the forum jaggedy,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums and to hear you've already been finding useful advice to help with your X-Type issues.

I can see you've found your way to the X-Type tech forum so there's no need for a link to it from me.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also visit the USA Western Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/western-us-ak-ca-nv-ut-hi-wa-id-38/
to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forums.

Graham
