Default Back in the fold!

Just got a 2006 XK8 Victory edition in Bay blue with Ivory leather. It’s my third Jag after a 96 XJ6 Sport, ‘97 XK8 and now this one. I’m home

I *think* I've sorted my signature out, this message should prove it one way or the other. Thanks for all the welcomes!

I set that for you earlier today when I was looking up your IP Address. If it's what you want then no need to do anything more. if you want a SigPic like most of the members who have replied here, you'll need to do further digging in the User CP settings to add it.

That explains it, thank you. I added the engine size. Not sure there's too much difference between 4.0 and 4.2, but at least I have metal timing chain tensioners in this one

I had a 2001 XK8 4.0 followed by a 2005 XK8 4.2-S Final Series (the equivalent specification to the US Victory Edition for the Rest of the World). Significant differences between the two. Both great cars but I did prefer the 4.2. The Victory Edition/Final Series had all the 'extras' as standard which makes it a great specification.

I just hope this one's reliable. My '97 was not. 74K miles on this one, I'm having the transmission fluid changed next week, which is the only worry - I have the "ZF squawk" and some clunky changes at times, but I've had clunky changes with other ZF transmissions. Unfortunately I'm in an area with no real Jag specialists. There's a transmission specialist who seems familiar with it, and a shop that deals in European cars, but few Jags. I'm favoring the transmission guy at this point, at least for that job. Doesn't hurt that he's quite a lot less expensive too.

The European guy has quoted genuine ZF fluid, the transmission guy has quoted generic fluid that meets or exceeds the specification. Should I pay the extra $300, or am I worrying about nothing?

My 2001 needed a replacement throttle body and ate upper wishbone bushes; my 2005 had no issues. These were three year old vehicles when I purchased them but used as daily drivers and for extended Continental touring so I put on a lot of miles. The 2001 had a split expansion tank on Christmas Eve in the Loire Valley in France which was an interesting experience.

I go with the recommended engine oil, transmission fluid and, apart from brake discs and pads, generally use OE parts. I know I could save money with alternatives but it removes all doubt for what is really only a slight premium. The biggest saving are always on labour as I do my own repairs and maintenance. However, we pay a lot less for parts and consumables in the UK than you do in the US. Not that it's all rosy - you would cringe at our fuel cost.

The ZF oil is only a brand, it's the specification that counts. When the transmission shop recommends an alternative that meets or exceeds that specification, you should have no worries.

Many thanks, Graham. I'm well aware of the cost differentials - I'm actually English by birth; I used to work for a UK company and was sent over here for 6 months. That was 16 years ago

I went back 4-6 times a year, and also to see family, but don't work there any longer.

But home is definitely over here now.

I'll talk to the Euro shop again, see what it would cost with a non-ZF, but correct spec fluid.
