Red face The "bullet proof XJ-40". How far can it go?

Howdy gents, my name is Lewis Edward.

From a German town in Brasil, Curitiba, I moved to Cape Cod for a year, then later to South Florida and San Francisco California for the remainder of my 12 years in the US so far.

From birth I've had a taste for British manufacturing. Two weeks before and two weeks after my birth I was on an excursion, inside a fully equipped Navy Blue Defender 90. We would go on for days! My last excursion prior to birth being two weeks long.

Being fortunate enough to have tested some of the best this world have to offer, I quickly learned to appreciate the real value of things, to appreciate the proper quality and care that goes into vehicles like this.

Which brings me to the title of this thread.

I recently acquired a 1993 XJ-6. 136,000 miles, I'm the 5th owner. And I began my research, first calling a so called specialist "the most knowable specialist on this coast" or what ever he called himself. To his merit he was right in that this year for the (93-94) was the best year I could have hope for. But he mistakenly told me the car was one of 970 world wide. More like one of 20 thousand. He proceeds to inform me that the cost for him to just look at the car will be $700, (funny enough that's exactly the amount I paid for the car)

As to demystify his claims, how bullet proof is this engine really? What are the highest recorded miles for the XJ40s XJ-6s out there?

The car currently has electrical issues that are supposedly limited to the following:

Electrical
- wiring for the right side blinkers
- wiring for the radiator fan

Mechanical
- After 20 days from last startup, a puff of smoke came up the size of a stretching ball, the next day I came over zero smoke.
*Notable that the first owner drove it to68k, 2nd to 110k,3rd and 4th both owned it for a year and less than 7k each. so something seems to happen after 100k.

I plan on freshening up the engine with new filters, basic work on the headers. Mainly to ensure all seals are good and to get better acquainted with the motor.

The extent of my mechanical knowledge is yet to be explored. I'd appreciate any and all advise surrounding the topic of longevity for the powertrain andsuch.
I specifically need to know of what components on the engine that should be left untouched. Keeping with my budget of $1000 leaving me with a $300 completing this first stage.
Simultaneously I'm starting a my own business, it sure would have been a wiser decision to go with the 05 civic I found for the same price, but as I'll mention later, this is a labor of love. And after all what is life if not lived? Just a waste of time.

My end goal for this jag is to reach the skies. I will either drive car and maintain it deep into the 6 figures, maybe even 7?
Or have itsold a long the way for around 10 grand. Whichever one comes first.

Nevertheless, I need to express that this is a labor of love. I am enchanted by the looks, history and looking forward to learning more about the mechanicals of this timeless machine.

Someone had something to say about Ferraris

I deeply appreciate the amount of love and care this guy put on this vehicle and you can see in the photos. I personally rather buy a fresh set of leather least and center console etc. Po I get to enjoy the vehicle at its purest

Did the XJ-6 from 93-94 ever come with these headlights? what trim or what years did?

(Attached are the photos of the car takes by previous owner for sale. Last image is a representation of the front with headlights that I can't figure out if where an option or an aftermarket modification as all I see when looking up XJ40's is the solid square headlights instead of the quad lights that are currently on the car. No front facing photos as of the moment.

Welcome to the forums Lewis,

Both of your Intro posts were automatically locked for moderation. I can't tell how you wrote them but it has taken me almost half an hour to remove all the strange source coding affecting the text and separate the many sentences which had no spaces between the words. I've have deleted your other post.

To answer your question about the headlights. Quad lights were standard on European specification XJ40's but not approved for the US market where the rectangular ones were fitted. Some US owners have retrofitted the quad lights.

Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xj40-xj81-25/ to the XJ40 forum for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues. Wink

Cheers mate!
I noticed on a message I sent it had this coding issue. Most certainly because my SPACE key is broken leading me to Ctrl+V.
I'm now typing in a text file to see if it helps..
Also for the initial post I was probably under the vetting process so would not show as posted therefore I could not asses the issue.
Thank you for the attention!

As to the Must Read, let me know if I missed anything! Been lots of reading and I appreciate you for pointing me to some more good stuff!
I'm towing the car today, I noticed soon after posting I'm encountering a common problem with loads of people documenting their experiences,
so I'll have no problem there.

Once again I appreciate your help Graham! I thank everybody for the warm welcome!
And special thanks to Elinor B., you've put a smile on my face!
