Finally joined, 2005 XJ8L bought in 2009
Hi, my wife and I have a Cobalt Blue Jaguar. We love the car but do not drive it much because it is our third car. It has 40,000 miles on her and runs great. I have a worry about the car, when it has been sitting for a while, it's timing chains make noise during cold start for a couple of minutes. It goes away and does not return until it sits again for a period of time. I have read that, while the 2005 began using metal timing chain guides, the pre-2005 guides (both types) tend to wear out and cause potential problems. I have looked at the procedure for changing the guides and it involves a lot of work. I am curious if I might possibly have a problem that has started to fester, or if there is something I should watch for to assure a problem does not develop.

I just put new tires on her. I chose Nexen 235 50 18V (Nexen 672) because they look and ride nice. I worry about the sidewalls, but I do not plan to be hitting many curbs. The stock Michellins had a lot of tread left on them but they dry rotted to the point you could (after the tire was off) push on the edge of the tread and see the belts. I had begun to fear driving with them on.
I have wanted a Jaguar since long before (in 1976) called Santa Blanche (John Debella) on WMMR Philadelphia and got through. Santa Blanche asked what I wanted for Christmas and I replied, "I want a Jag". I busted out laughing as I hung up. Then the clip was replayed soon after with Santa Blanche saying, "Do you want it under your pillow or in your stocking?". I think I said in the stocking.

The 2005 is far beyond the early plastic tensioner design that failed on early V8's. You say the vehicle stands for long periods. Does it have an OE Jaguar oil filter fitted or an aftermarket replacement with a non-return valve? If not, all the oil will be draining back into the oil pan and it takes a while to build up pressure on starting which would explain the timing chain rattle. Worth checking and eliminating this before going on to more serious (and expensive) possible causes.

GGG, thank you very much. What you said makes sense. I did replace the oil filter with a WIX filter and am thinking it does not have a non-return valve. I will make sure I buy one with a non-return valve before I start it again. The sound I hear at start up really stresses me, as well it should. I believe what you said is the cause of the issue.
I checked and the WIX filter does have a non-return valve. I read that you should always run the engine at least once every two weeks. This is probably due to the fact that even with the non-return filter, the oil will work its way out. I need to see if there is some way to prime the motor before starting if has sat for a while. I also am going to add some sort of Slick 50/50 to coat the metals with silicone so cold starts aren't so harsh.

Thank you JimC64! I also own a 2001 Honda S2000 (#82) and see this forum as excellently run. I look forward to exploring more of it and possibly contributing helpful information.
Thank you everyone for the welcome. I have built a couple of Firebirds back in the Eighties, including engine, suspension, paint and modifying the transmission. I generally do all the major work on my vehicles (if I have or can obtain the tools). I get great satisfaction from working on them. Doing so puts them closer to my heart. Our 2005 XJ8 has long been a dream and looks to be my greatest pleasure yet.
