Default First Jaguar, 1995 XJ6

I just picked up a 1995 XJ6. Just a bit over 72,000 miles. Paid $2850.00 and I feel well bought. I wanted this year for the best of the 3-year X300 run but, the shorter version of the three years. I don't have a need for extra passenger room.

Good:
Same caring owner for the past 7 years
Plenty of maintenance receipt.
Low miles
4 Brand new Goodyear Assurance all season tires
All electrics work including sunroof, windows, locks, radio, clock, etc...
New battery this January
Heat and AC work
Radio and it's antenna work
Seat adjustment and heaters work
Recent new exhaust
Engine compartment is spotless
All original manuals

Not So Good
Peeling clear coat (yes, they all do it and I knew this going into it)
Sagging headliner. Same as above
Check engine light is on. Owner said it tested as the secondary air pump???
Broken cup holder
A rust spot about the size of a roll of quarters on the driver's rear wheel well
Missing one center cap
Probably needs shocks. Seller says it sometimes "clunks" or rear bushings
Has a VERY SLIGHT shake around 60 mph on the test drive

I hope this treats me better than my last British experience, a 2002 P38 Range Rover..

I will take my time cleaning, changing fluids, belts and possibly hoses. Have the "clunk" and shake looked into and buy an OBDII code reader so I can look into that CEL. Eventually the car will get a complete re-spray to address the rust and clear coat issues.

I am sure this site, much like my BMW and Mercedes sites will be a wealth of info.

Welcome.

Nothing serious in that list that I can see.

Welcome to the forum MSGGrunt,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

I can see you've already found your way to the X300 forum so there's no need for a link to it from me.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

You can also visit the US Northeast Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/us-northeast-35/
to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forums.

Welcome MSGGrunt. That's a pretty similar car to my own 1996 Sovereign and it sounds like you've found yourself a really good example. To find a 22-year-old car with so few 'issues' is quite an achievement !
As you suspect, clunks and shakes are most likely to be suspension bushes. They can be quite regular maintenance items on a Jaguar.
These models aren't overly rust-prone, with rear wheel arches and the area on front front wings (fenders ?) where they meet with the sills (rocker panels ?) being the major culprits. The XJ40, which is almost the same body, suffered in the same areas too.
Enjoy driving it !
