Default Got a modern car

Old Healey/MG nut finally got a complex ride, 08 XK convertible. Gonna need some help I expect. The Healey had two fuses and a funny box that made the turn signals work. Should I try to learn how to maintain this car? Had it two years with no problems. Now the rear quarter window is stuck down. Wonder how to post my question? My iPhone is a three and I can’t download an app.
but I managed to sign up here so all may not be lost. I find answers from this forum by asking google. There must be a better way.

Welcome to the forums Jeff,

YES - you certainly should learn how to maintain your XK. Dealer or independent expertise is expensive.

Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk-xkr-x150-33/ to the X150 forum for help, advice and information. That's the place to post technical questions about your model. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues. You can also use the US Western Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/us-western-38/ to find other members in your region.

Please read the guidance for new members ( https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...ned-up-241802/ ) which answers many of the most frequent questions about getting started.

Enjoy the forums.

Hello, Jeff,
Congratulations on your new Jaguar XK!
2008 is before everything got stupidly complex. You'll still be driving basically a car and not a computer on wheels. For that reason, stuff will be relatively easy to fix. Members in our XK section will be glad to help you keep your new kitty puuuuring.

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

Well, at least one aspect of modern cars is easier - tuning. There isn't any. The nice thing about modern computerized cars is they tune themselves. If you take the engine apart far enough, you might have to set up the camshaft timing as you put it back together, but there's nothing to adjust to get it to run right. And those computer codes, well they tell you what's wrong so you don't have to guess, or at least point you to which system is misbehaving. Having grown up with carbs and points, I find modern cars much easier actually. The only thing that makes modern cars more difficult really is "luxury" as they just have a lot more creature comforts and conveniences, each system adding dozens or hundreds of potential failure points.

But even fixing the luxury systems, consider, when I was learning to bend carburetor linkages and file distributor points, for instructions I had to go to this big building downtown called a library and check out books on the subject - books written by engineers who assumed I had graduated from automotive trade school and just needed the specific steps and reference values for a particular model. The younger me could not have imagined a Google search pulling up a forum discussion on the topic let alone a How-to video on a Youtube , Like grandpa once said, the good ole days are today. You might ought to upgrade your phone so you can take advantage, but I think you'll find its not as scary as you think. Welcome aboard.
