Default Greetings from the Midwest

Hey there,

I've decided to join these forums for research and to help when I can. I have a huge automotive background from imports to domestic and am currently building a Lexus SC300 to 700hp on the ClubLexus forums. I am very handy and have always done my own work. I can practically fix anything on a car except body work, for now..

As of now, I'm looking into a 2002 X-Type 3.0 AWD. It's an Automatic with 122,000 Miles. The body is perfect besides a headlight cleaning and a good wash/wax. Drives straight and quiet, not a single concern after about a 30 mile test drive.

The interior is very clean minus a couple small things. I have noticed the headliner is starting to sag a bit, the center console seems a bit loose and there's a small chip or hole in the back bottom seat but nothing to worry about.

They are wanting $5000 for it. My questions after researching these forums is what common problems should I look/check for?

Thanks and I hope to enjoy my stay and be very active on these forums!

Hey Kris9884 Welcome to the Forum! Sounds like a nice Jag.

I don't know a lot about the X-Type. My forte is more the 1996-2007 XKR/XK8 and the 2000-2009 XJ Series. Here are some general tips when buying any Jag.
1. Look for a documented service history with reciepts. Don't take anybody's word that it has been serviced.
2. Hook up an OBDII code read and look for active and inactive codes. Jags have a delicate electrical system. Modules and sensors can be expensive. Many times a weak battery can cause random codes to be thrown.
3. Look for oil and coolant leaks.
4. If the transmission does not shift silky smooth...look for another car. Jag transmissions are expensive. AWD? So is there a transfer case?
5. You sound like you are extremely competent. Get it up on a lift to check suspension, brakes, driveline, etc and for any hidden accident damage.
6. Go to the X-Type Tech forum. Should be lots of good info there.

See you at Cars and Coffee!

Cheers!

Jon
