Hi there, my name is David and I recently got my first Jag, an 1989 XJ40 (Which thanks to the vin decoder here I learned its a Sovereign). For whatever reason I like writing long intro stories for this type of thing so here it goes...
Im an apprentice mechanic at a tire shop right now, one day about a year ago this XJ40 pulls up, customer walks on talks to my boss for a few minutes, then leaves. A couple days later, on his day off, my boss pulls up in this same XJ40.

Well, story goes it wasnt running properly, and the fellow walked in and asked the first person he saw (my boss) if he knew anyone who wanted a free Jaguar.
My boss, whos hyundai just blew a headgasket and hydrolocked, and being a very "frugal" man, volunteered himself for that. He isnt an enthusaist, he was simply looking for cheap A to B transportation.

But guess who had to fix it up for him? This guy. First look as to why it wasnt running properly, misfiring on 5 and 4. Found the dizzy cap was installed with the alignment tab 180 degrees away from where it was supposed to be, as well as 2 cracked, brand new sparkplugs. Started with the simple stuff by fixing that. Also noticed the gas door drain was plugged and full of water, and the fuel tank had water in it as well. After resolving all that and still having it run like poop, decided to check for exhaust gases in the coolant reservoir. BINGO, blown headgasket. My boss, frugal as he was, had no interest in replacing the headgasket.
His logic was, it still ran, so he was dead set on driving it untill he got the company car he was expecting. I begged him to sell it to me, but he absolutely did not want to buy another vehicle.

I reluctantly agreed that he would drive it untill he either got his company vehicle, or the car died even more, at which point it would be given to me. Well about 3 weeks ago he texted saying its got no power and it started overheating, and it was mine. Got it back to the place I store my cars at, and started the teardown.

Ive come here for some info about pulling the head, mostly with the cam chain tensioner, but I hope to gather lots of information to help keep my old Jag on the road

Thanks all, just added some vehicle info to my signature!

 

What I should add, is that my dad and grandfather are both Jaguar enthusiasts, between the 3 of us weve restored a Mk2 with an E type in the works, my dad and I have done a couple for other people, and Ive always helped maintain the family's collection.Right now theres a series 3 XJ6, an XJ300, a new S type, old S type, the Mk2, E type, and an XK8. There hav also been a couple more Mk2s, a Mk1, a Mk7, and a series 2 XJ6.

Oh, I also have a Mk3 Cortina!

 

I'm not surprised Jaguars are getting harder to find - you've got a good proportion of them.
