Default Hello from North carolina.

Hi I purchases a XJ8 , 1999 , base about a month ago real beauty with only74,000 miles, I have previously owned a 2002 X-type back in 04.

I was brought up in England around Jags and have owned other British cars, namely Austin Healy Sprite, Mg's and a Triumph Spitfire . Also British Bikes. My other ride is a handicapped van with hand controls as I am wheelchair bound for the past 7 years. But last month i managed to purchase an additional motorized wheelchair that I can manage to fold up, disassemble in two moves and is very light and fits into the trunk. So my wife purchased the XJ for me.( who's a lucky boy then !!)

The jag has a couple of issues nothing major (but you expect that with a my new baby in the house) !st the clocks on the dash woulg be on at daytime and go out when any headlight setting was turned on at night. However the problem resolved itself after the battery went dead on me. Bringing me to the 2nd issue, I had the battery fuly tested and it is drawing .75 ampwhen 1st switched off, but need to know if it will drop after 15 mis or so? Does the computer switch off? If so when?? And what amp should I see?
Also the battery looks quite old(can not see adate on it) But I know the Jag sat a while before I purchased it, so maybe it is showing a reading as good at Advance autos when tested but losing power over 3 nights. The temps here are mild about 36 -60 degrees at night the last couple of weeks , but it losts its real cahrge 3 weeks ago when the temps dipped to 24 degreesat night.
There is a slight leak on the valve covers ! How serious is this and should it be addressed immediateley The jag repair guy I took it too who looked over it for me, changed the belts etc didn'seem to worried. There is no oil I can see leaking on the floor. Also he reports a steering rack leak and suggests repair. Again I am having no loss of fluid on the floor or in the power steering resevoir?

Look forward to being part of the community and any answers to the queries I have greatly appreciated. Also where's the link to set up my profile.

thanks Dermott

Welcome to the forum Dermott,

Good to have you with us.
A good battery is vital to these cars so it may pay to change it if you have doubts.
The major thing with the 4.0 is to be certain that the tensioners have been upgraded.
You'll find plenty of info on that in the forum tech sections.
For your profile, look at the black bar at the top left of any page and click on user cp.

You should add your car details to your signature to help others to help you.

Hello and welcome Dermott,

To save you looking any further for a battery manufacture date, I'm sure there won't be one if it's original Jaguar supplied. I had to replace the battery on my last two Jaguars (XJ8L and XK8) and purchased them from the local Jaguar distributor. In both cases the date was stamped on the box but not on the battery case!

Go to 'User CP' far left on the menu below the forum banner to setup your profile.
