Hi everyone. So happy to find this extensive and well organized forum. I joined because I recently inherited by late uncle's 1972 Jag XJ6 L SII. I grew up with my dad's 1970s E-type, so I knew what I was getting myself into with this new old car, but welcome the opportunity to have one of my own to take care of.
There are quite a few mysteries about this car I am hoping some of you can eventually help me solve. I have my uncle's maintenance records going back to about 1999 when he got the car. At that time, he initiated an extensive 1.5-yr rebuild of the engine. Why? I don't know. I don't know what condition it was in when he got it. I do know from the maintenance records that the old engine was replaced with a 1980 one (but records do not say what model). It also says any other parts were from a 1974 (again, no model listed). So that right there is very frustrating because I don't think most of the engine is original to the car.
The fun thing about this beauty is that it has been used in Hollywood. If you can find a copy of Natalie Wood's last full movie she made (1980, Universal) "The Last Married Couple in America", the car is featured throughout the film in many scenes. I was also told that it was formerly owned by Hollywood actor Ray Milland ("Dial M for Murder", "The Lost Weekend" and hundreds of other movies/tv appearances).
So in addition to researching the rebuild of this beautiful car, the movie angle is another source of intrigue for me. I look forward to getting know the folks here and learning from your expertise and experience!

Hello, Vanessa,
Congratulations on your new Series 2 Jaguar! Although I'm sorry for how you got it.
In my opinion, and I freely admit my shameless bias, the Xj6 Series 2 was the most Beautiful car ever to roll off the Jaguar assembly line.
I'll look for you over in our Xj6 section Here:
Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

Yes, that's the car in the background. I downloaded the movie so that I could make several screencaps from the film. Plan on getting the best ones framed. I'll upload some to my albums shortly for you.
Welcome Vanessa
Good to have another Jag in New England. Interesting history on the car. Pictures when you can please.
Good find, Graham!
Thank you! I've created an album with a few screen captures of the car in the film. It's had a new paint job since then, but still very much the same mink color. Interior was also replaced from the leather to velour in 1999. I will make an album of this also when I get a chance.
If you want to know the specification to discover the original engine number etc., JHT (Jaguar Heritage Trust) can supply the build sheet as a Heritage Certificate: https://www.jaguarheritage.com/archi.../certificates/
They charge an outrageous 50 UKP for this but many owners consider it worthwhile to validate provenance of their Jaguar.
