Default (hopefully) a 2002 XKR owner this Saturday!

Going to look at a beautiful XKR this coming Saturday with high hopes the actual condition matches the pictures and description. Thanks to this forum for lots of good pre-purchase inspection info, as I've been a VW, BMW, MG and Triumph owner until now, and most issues with the older cars are usually diagnosed with your ears and butt, not scan tools. ;^)

I'm an ex aircraft and avionics technician and lucky enough to have a wonderful wife/keeper that lets me buy lots of man-toys including a fully equipped garage (with two-post lift) and I plan on doing all the maintenance myself. The car will mainly be used for Cars & Coffee runs and shows on weekends with rare occasional "weekday" use, as my truck (Dodge Mega Cab) doesn't fit easily in downtown parking garages on the occasions I need to drive into the office.

The only concern I have is upon running a Carfax on this car it shows very little maintenance performed by the first owner between 7/2001 to 12/2004 and just under 36k miles. The local Jag dealer said not to overly worry about it and base my decision on current condition. I am taking it for a full inspection but is this lack of maintenance records on Carfax something I should be overly concerned with, or am I just jittery? The current owner states he has "complete records" and has spent considerable time/money completely sorting the car.

I *Love* that line! How true it is, and how simple they are! Most don't even have scanning ports!

Welcome to the Forum Cabel.

Carfax reports can give you a first impression only and might indicate a "trend" of issues during the first phase of a car's life.

I study as many as possible before buying a car to look for particular issues with a particular model. Then for items that may have been replaced rather too often on a specific car indicating a particular problem recurring. If you see brake pads/rotors being replaced frequently maybe an issue with the car or the driver really driving aggressively.

These things show up on Carfax when under warranty and may not at all after warranty expires since the owner at that stage elects not to use a dealer or some shop that does not enter details into database OR no maintenance was performed.

Also to eliminate a car with too may previous owners.

If the current owner has lots of records indicating good maintenance that is hopeful.

Well I pulled the trigger. Came home with StingRay71's 2002 XKR. In a snowstorm. Exciting drive home, but the Jag is now tucked in nice and cozy in the garage with a '67 MGB GT and '74 MGB roadster as company. ;^)
