Default Intro Kurt Doelle

Hello, my name is Kurt Doelle. I truly appreciate Jaguar cars more than I am able to express. I am a middle class, cash strapped chap who owns a 1984 XJS, 1997 Xj6 VANDEN PLAS, 2004 S Type base and I am responsible for my Mum's 2005 XJ8l.

All of the cars are waxed, clean and in great shape. Feel in love with the XKE and then became enamored with the rest of the models.

I appreciate the detail, style, workmanship and legacy of these cars and enou the refined culture of the many owners I have encountered.

I do have a sincere question-

The 1997 XJ6 will often stall at stop lights, red lights due to a voltage drop. By gradually giving it gas or frequent re-starts it will fire back up to 13 volts.

I often times will take the limp mode Jag for a fill up and it usually fires back up to full voltage.

I would be beyond thankful for any advice.

Cheers and thanks for the opportunity.

Kurt Doelle

Welcome to the forum Kurt,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

A serious amount of washing and waxing on that fleet! I recommend posting the question about the 1997 XJ6 issue in the X300 tech forum for advice from members with the same model.

Follow this link XJS - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the XJS forum, this one XJ X300 / XJR - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the X300 forum, this one S-Type / S type R Supercharged V8 - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the S-Type forum and this one XJ ( X350 & X358 ) XJ6 / XJ8 / XJR - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the X350 forum for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top of each is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

Welcome aboard.

Nice collection gathering there.

The X300 sounds like an alternator having a hissy. It is an Hitachi unit (ours are down here).

I reckon a good auto electrician should be able to sort it quickly and easily.

Second could be the battery itself is past its use by date, and these cars are "juice hungry".

Also the serpentine belt may be old and slipping, especially when after start load is applied from the alternator.

A repost of the query in the X00 section will get lots of assistance.

Default Thanks,

Thanks, I appreciate all of your insights. I have a new battery in (the correct one) and I also had a new alternator put in 2 years ago with a new belt. I am thinking it may have been the wrong one. The car refuses to start after 6 hours of non use. A quick jump brings it back to life. Everything works on the car once it is jumped. I appreciate all of your efforts.

Cheers,

Kurt

The aforementioned no juice/starting issue coincides with the voltage drop at stop signs or red lights. Could this be an alternator issue? The belt is snug and relatively new. The alarm is set on the car upon shut down. i have had testing doen on the car to see if it was a power drain was present after shut down and no drain was found. Again, I did replace the battery less than 1 year ago and the alternator 2 years ago.

Again, thanks very much for any further insights.

I am truly grateful for the opportunity to learn from your expertise rather than play Russian roulette with my mechanic.

Cheers,

Kurt

Kurt,

You have eliminated a loose drive belt and parasitic drain so that leaves either faulty battery or alternator as the next likely culprits. Either of these could be the cause even though both have been replaced within the last two years.

My gut feeling from the combination of symptoms you describe is alternator.

Graham
