Hello folks, I have two XK8s, a '97 convertible and an '06 coupe. I have done quite a bit of repair work on the '97 - I bought it knowing I'd have to do some things to it. One of the weirdest was a clanking noise which seemed for all the world that it was located right behind the passenger airbag. After removing the glovebox and airbag and looking things over, it was obvious there were no issues there. Long story short, the actual noise was caused by a worn out upper shock strut bushing. That allowed the top of the shock stud to move around and randomly contact the opening in the top of the shock tower. The reason it sounded like the noise originated from the inside, is that convertibles have a stiffening brace on each side which connects the top of the shock tower to the dash panel. The noise conducts directly through the brace into the dash panel. Stay tuned and I will pass along other tidbits which may be useful to other forum users.
