I've convinced myself I need an XJR.
So I got the blanket ok from the wifey for a toy. While a diehard Porsche loyalist, I stumbled into the wonderful world of lightly used, depreciated jags. I drive about 34k miles/yr and don't think a 25-30 year old 944 would be up for the task. A 9-12 year old 390hp fully loaded jag might just keep me pacified for a while.
I'm basically looking for a well-maintained garage queen to put into full time service. I've done some research and lurking and read the "What to look for in the X350" sticky. Most of the X350s I've found all have about 76-80k miles. Why does this seem to be the magic number? I know the engines have a metal timing chain but with plastic tensioners that wear out. While I can't find an official preventative maintenance schedule for the tensioners, is 80k the typical time to change them?
Are these cars being unloaded because the owner doesn't want to incur the cost for something that's "only driven on dates"?
And what is the cost to replace the tensioners? Don't want to flush out a "good deal" only to turn around and immediately put $3k into maintenance.

Welcome!
You're familar with the X350 section so no need to point you there.
There was no problem with the tensioners on the 4.2L engines, the 4.0L was the one that had all the dramas. So don't worry about that.

Welcome to the forum Estwing,
Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.
It sounds like you've already found your way to the X350 tech forum so there's no need for a link to it from me. You won't find any plastic timing chain tensioner issues there but you will find transmission and driveline ones on that model.
You can also visit the USA Western Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/western-us-ak-ca-nv-ut-hi-wa-id-38/ to find other members in your region.

Thanks for the welcomes!
Found an 2004 S-Type R. Would these have the same concerns being the same generation, same engine as the XJR? Several of the carfax for S types I reviewed had frequent suspension entries.
Haven't done as much research on the S-Type. I drove an 02 and didn't like it so I wrote if off. Then my wife found an R and said she liked it. Happy wife, happy life, right?

Yes - the 4.2 litre supercharged engine.
Check the S-Type / S type R Supercharged V8 ( X200 ) - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum forum for regular issues with this model.
