Default Won't Start

1blondegal,
I recently had this problem with my Range Rover, backed it out onto the street to do some work on a Jeep (now there is a 'dray'), half an hour later wouldn't start when I went to bring it back in. Firstly, when you turn the key to the start position, do the dash lights dim or not. If they do, check connections between the battery and the starter motor, including carefully check earth connections.

If they don't, check the wiring circuitry between the ignition switch and the starter solenoid, in particular the connector to the solenoid itself. I had to pull mine off, clean it, and refit it. Took me all of two minutes, and solved the problem. Since you don't appear to be all that 'mechanical', (I did read about the spark & the petrol), I'd suggest that you 'show a little leg' and get your friend to have a look at the light wire with a spade terminal which plugs onto the back of the solenoid which is bolted onto the starter motor.

The basics are, if there is no 'dimming' of the dash indication (warning) lights, then there is no load being placed on the battery. Starting an engine draws one hell of a lot of current (like 400 to 600 amps), therefore any low current draw lights like globes or similar will dim due to the voltage drop incurred.

The other thing to chech is that the gear selector is properly seated in park or neutral. Also, (and I'm not sure with your model) be aware that there can be acorrelatrion between the footbrake being applied and selecting out of park. If someone has used force to try to do this, it is possible to damage the adjustment which can result in the park position not enabling the circuit to complete to the starter motor. This is fairly unlikely, but I've heard of stranger things.

cheers,

Languid
