Default In the Jaguar market

Hello all, I'm new to the Jaguar market. I have always like the brand but never really looked into it. I was offered a seemingly too good to be true deal on a 2001 S Type. I don't know much about the upkeep of a Jaguar. It has 185,000 miles on it. Should I go for it?

Hello mrbraan,
Well all I can say is that any car with 185,000 on the clock always worries me a little, I would like to see a full service history and also get a Mechanic that knows these cars to do a check on it also do a Carfax.
If all looks good and you like it, then why not but be aware that parts for any Jag are not cheap.
Also you might want to have a look on Kelly Blue Book just to make sure that deal really is a good one.
Try not to fall in love with it because it may just end up biting you, be prepared to walk away. Just use your head.
Good Luck,
knobby

Welcome to the forum mrbraan,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

Used Jaguars have attractive low prices because they aren't low cost transport. An expensive vehicle when new, they still require an appropriate level of maintenance as they grow older and parts aren't cheap.

I wouldn't worry too much about high mileage but service history is crucial. There should be evidence of routine maintenance (service every 12k miles or 12 months whichever comes sooner. The vehicle has obviously spent a lot of time on the road so it can't have spent too much time in the shop!

Sit down with the handbook and go through all the switches and controls to make sure everything works. Seemingly small faults can cost a lot to repair.

Follow this link S-Type / S type R Supercharged V8 ( X200 ) - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the S-Type forum for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

Thank you. I am going to look at it today. The dealer told me that the ABS light is on. She just replaced the battery and is selling for 2000.00. The blue book isn't terribly far out off from this.

ABS light is quite a regular issue on a number of models. Can be anything from a dirty wheel speed sensor or broken link lead to a module.
