just bought an old jag
Hi im Marshall, I just bought a 1986 xjs a few days ago, i had it checked by a mechanic and everything was fine but today I went to a meeting and when I got back to the car it would not go out of park? I ended up having someone come get me but will go back tomorrow any ideas what to check for, is there any type of manual release for park? I cant even get it into neutral.
Welcome to the forum Marshall,
Congratulations on the XJS. Sorry to hear about the shift issue. It sounds like a faulty interlock solenoid.
Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xjs-32/ to the XJS section for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top there is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Welcome Marshal.
The '86 XJ-S has NO "P" interlock system.
The TH400 trans (GM unit), is not known to jam in "P".
The gearchange cable may be binding internally due to old age now.
Soooo, find a trustworthy mate. Have him stomp on the brakes, and you reach under the LH side of the car, and feel for the manual connecting arm on the outside of the trans casing where that cable actually attaches, just inboard of the LH exhaust pipe. As he attempts to pull it out of "P", you push and shove that arm as best you can to maybe get it out of "P".
Engine OF is best, that pipe will get too hot otherwise, and there is no electrical requirement for this, purely mechanically.
Since these cars are SO low, reaching in is about all you will get, so be careful, make sure he keeps his foot on the brakes PLEASE.
The actual gearlever works in a crazy mess of gated teeth to get from one gear position and then the next, so maybe the lever inside the console is hissy. Simply unscrew the ski slope attaching screws (4 I think, maybe 3), and lift that slope clear, and look at the lever assembly, it may be the cross pin has slid out and jammed the works??.
I am assuming it is a V12 car. If not forget what I said, as the 6 cyl has a different transmission.

Hi Marshall:
Welcome to the forum and greetings from the Midwest Region! Congrats on the car and best of luck in working out the little niggles that have, and will eventually, come along. It's part of the fun of ownership, I suppose. When a good friend and mentor sold me my '91 a number of years ago he said, "Well, you don't want to drive something boring!" Indeed!
cheers,
Scott
