Lights go out
Thanks to all who have replied. I retrieved the car from the Jag dealer yesterday evening. The diagnostic tests including a road test all showed no problems!
The lights started going out again after about a mile.As I was on the M4 at the time it was very worrying. I switched off the main beams and ran on sidelights and foglamps to get home. I have no idea if the sidelights go off and on as well since the headlamp symbol on the dash is not working either!
I think Translator is right. I will try to get the mechanic to come out with me. It will have to be in the dark, otherwise its not easy to see if the lights have gone out.
Will keep you informed.

lights go out
Thanks Cadillac,
Following translator's advice, since the Jag dealer is a 30min drive away, I took it to my local garage at dusk and got a mechanic to come out with me. The lights clicked off after about 5mins and he said it sounded like the relays, as you suggested. As a non Jag garage he could not fix it unfortunately, since it apparently needs a dealer to programme the master relay.
We seem to be getting somewhere.
