Looking to buy my first Jag
Hey everyone!
I’m looking to buy my first Jag. It’s going to be my winter/daily driver since my other car is slowly turning into a race car.
The one I’m looking at is a 2009 supercharged XF with ~188k on the clock. Current owner says it’s rust free and brakes and tires are in good condition. Only part that needs to be fixed is the catalytic converter as it’s toast. He’s supplying a new one in the purchase price, which is $6000 CAD.
Does anyone have tips for first buyers? Anything I should look out for?

As with buying any older, high mileage car, you can find checklists for inspection online. One thing to look out for on this model specifically is the glue that holds the dash leather breaks down and its a rather expensive repair if you can't live with it bubbling and pulling away from the edges. I'd also suggest to check very carefully all of the cooling system hoses and especially the plastic piping for any signs of leakage (and then don't be surprised if leaks appear soon after as its all just old and brittle now). The higher the mileage and older it is, the more critical to know that the maintenance was done on schedule. No records = no sale. No exceptions.
But I'm already suspicious when a car exhibits some symptoms and the seller offers to include the parts but hasn't gone ahead and had it fixed. I tend to think the reason is because they know its something more serious and they are hoping they can convince a buyer that its really a simple catalytic converter. It would probably be wise to take the car to an independent mechanic and pay for a pre-purchase inspection. If you are happy with the car otherwise, tell the seller that if they'll go ahead and have the catalytic converter installed, you'll pay the agreed upon price, plus the cost of the installation after you've confirmed that the car is indeed fixed. If you need to, maybe give him a deposit that'll cover half the installation cost with the understanding that if its not fixed, that you get your deposit back and walk away. If they won't take that deal, then the car has more problems than the seller is disclosing.
Once you've made your purchase tho, don't disappear from the forum. Read and consume as much as you can here from other X250 owners and follow the forum recommendations for preventative maintenance. Even with 188Km, somebody here always racks up more mileage faster than you, encounters problems before you, and we all have constructive discussion about how to keep it from happening to the rest of us. Good luck.

The car looks exceptional and would require taking it to a reputable mechanic familiar with Jaguars. Typical British cars, although nice end up costing in repairs.
I would not even consider this car unless I can see the codes and get it inspect. I would not buy car like that sight unseen as "only part that needs to be fixed" can end up a huge list of issues...
At 188K catalytic converted could have failed on its own... but it could also be a sign of unburned fuel getting dumped into exhaust or excessive oil blow-by.
