Talking Love these forums

Hello All, I am not new to the forum atmosphere, but am new to this forum. My background for cars: I've had a lot of them and most had to be updated, fixed repaired, etc to get them on the road. 90% of the work was done by myself and later on my wife and son joined in. My first "strip and redo" was a 1967 Cutlass Convertible, which I sold in 1988 to go on my honeymoon in 1989. My latest DIY's were a 1989 XJS, which I bought for my wife. I didn't belong to a forum back then, but what I did have was the on line book "Experience in a Book". What a God send that was, completely changed my whole approach to working on the car. Next vehicle was a 2008 BMW M5, which I purchased for pretty much a song (it had a "mangled" abused engine) and water leaked into the cab for probably 2 years. This was my son's project, but I was there every step of the way. Found it to have a spun bearing, chewed up crank because of that and two bent rods. We put it back into BMW spec, and what a screamer it was. Fastest machine I had driven in a long time. Spring forward to NOW. Just purchased a 2001 XK8 with 200K miles on it. Only 2 owners, and this guy has had it since 2004. Funny, not a whole lot of information from him other than he had regular maintenance done after the engine was replaced in 2006.
So, what should I be looking for that has the potential to bite me in the wallet? I did do a scan on it with my universal scan tool, it came up with a couple of codes probably related to needing new O2 sensors, and a Throttle Positioner error. When we worked on the BMW, we had a program for accessing EVERY aspect of the car right down to seatbelt issues. Is there any available, easy to use programs available out there for a 2001? I went looking on E-Bay, found a couple of items but they were newer versions that wouldn't work on the pre-2007 models.
I'm looking forward to hopefully not needing a whole lot of help from the forum, but as we all know, these cars love to be loved on so I'm sure I will be seeking advice from people that may have seen it before.
Thanks for reading my "short" manifesto, and I look forward to conversations with you all. John

Good to have you with us.

Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk8-xkr-x100-17/ to the XK8/XKR forum for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues. If you want to delve into the vehicle electronics then Jaguar SDD (Symptom Driven Diagnostics) is the software. Plenty of advice and discussion in General Tech Help forum.

Please read the guidance for new members ( https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...ned-up-241802/ ) which answers many of the most frequent questions about getting started.

Enjoy the forums.

Welcome. You can acquire a cloned version of the factory SDD/IDS program, which requires a stand-alone laptop running Win-XP, or a virtual machine; the software is very powerful and can also brick your car if used incorrectly.

Another option is an older version of the iCarsoft i930, or LR-II (not 2) code reader. I have the LR-II and it can read everything down to which parking aid sensor is duff..

Hello, John,
When I met husband he was driving a partially restored 1958 Austin-Healey 100-6, into which he has mounted a Ford 289.
It was The Car that got my attention first, so when he asked I married him, as I thought it was the Coolest Car EVER and he seemed to be a Doer of Cool Things!

In a little while, he said we were sort of cash, so HE SOLD THE CAR!!!
I didn't think we were THAT broke and I didn't forgive him for a very long time, Until he bought me an Xj6, Nix in my signature below.
All good now.

Good Job buying your wife a Jag to replace the Cutlass convertible.
Good Job indeed!

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

Hello Johnny and Welcome!
You'll find a number of Baltimore/Washington owners lurking on these forums. We had a get-together recently in nVA, and hope to do another later this year.
Owners of older Jaguars (and BMWs, and ...) are fortunate if they live near a good independent mechanic who understands their brand. You and I are lucky to have Hunt Valley Eurocar. I try and do as much maintenance and minor repairs as I can myself, but it's nice to have experts nearby. I have no social or monetary interest in HV Eurocar, BTW.
I'll let you know about the next breakfast get-together.
