Default My new XJS

Dear forum members,

I just paid 10% advance for my new XJS. It is a 1977 car, coffee brown, test drive was very nice except for coolant fluid dripping onto the asphalt below, electrics didn't work such as windows couldn't be rolled down, AC was not working, the air fan was not working, all on a very hot day so it was sweaty inside. Lights on the dashboard didn't seem to work either. Electric door locking mechanism did work.
Drive was smooth, the car felt strong, transmission worked well.
Some outer body panels have been repaired before but it isn't rusty at this time. The underside looked free from rust. Really, no rust on it anywhere to be found.
I had a guy do a ppe on the spot and he said 1 in a 100 is this good.
The seller is a dealer who specializes in classic cars. His car lot is full of old Mercedeses, Mustangs, Porsches and so on. The advance payment is so that he can sort out certain things on the car. He is allowed 60 days to complete the following.
Pass 3 inspections by authorities at the end of which it will be registered in Hungary (where I live) as a road legal classic car. (Being registered as a classic has insurance benefits in Hungary)
Repaint the top of the car and the driver side door. Fix the radiator fans. Fix the AC. Fix the coolant radiator. Use dry ice to clean the underside. Paint the exhaust pipes.
When this is all done and the inspections are passed I pay the remaining 90% and take the car.

Huhh. I honestly can't wait. I love it.
I wasn't looking for a Jaguar XJS, I wasn't even looking for a Jaguar, I just wanted a nice old car. I wasn't even looking for something of this age. I looked at Nissans, Porsches and now this ended up happening.
I feel the price is a total bargain. I won't disclose. Let me know what you think.

jani129,

Great choice! Early XJSs are really shooting up in price and extremely desirable!

Send us all some pics of the car! And make sure that coolant leak get sorted. You must definitely not overheat one of these V12s!

The windows cannot be rolled down, air fans don't work, the car won't start(at this point in time it didn't) I closed the door for the sake of the photo hahaha

The door handle is so hot. Hahahaha

I felt I had to erase the price below the photo. It was a steal.

The interior is really something.

This is weird, I don't actually yet own the car but I do have a kind of contract with deadlines etc when it will be ready and what needs to be done to it by the seller before that. The seller doesn't advertise the car for sale anymore so he took the photos down, as I contracted to buy it. I did't take a lot of photos yet. SO I don't have much to show, anyway, see these.

Also there are some oil leaks, between the camshaft housing and the cylinder head, Also the rear differential is leaking oil. Other sources of oil leaks will have to be systematically determined by firstly cleaning the oil off the engine and then driving a few hundred kms to see where the oil is really coming from.

What I plan to do with it?
Put it in a garage. My mom and dad's garage. Hahaha
I will use it on days when the roads are dry, no precipitation. Probably not drive it to work and to shopping but everywhere else, why not. I want to use it. Also I wonder if parking it on the street might not be such a great idea, this car is very spectacular after all.

Welcome to the forums jani129,

Good to have you with us.

I know you've already found your way to the XJS forum so there's no need for a link to it from me. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues. You can also use the Europe Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/europe-42/ to find other members in your region.

Please read the guidance for new members ( https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...ned-up-241802/ ) which answers many of the most frequent questions about getting started.

Enjoy the forums.

The deal is now final, the seller did quite a lot of work on the car, replaced the radiator, the fuel tank was sandblasted and coated with resin from the inside, ac was fixed, electronic issues were fixed(originally almost no electronics worked, now everything works afaik), the car passed an exam and is now registered as a classic(this means all parts should be like original). Some body panels were painted. It is a LHD car which fits local traffic . The exhaust pipes were painted. On the drive home I noticed the idle when warm is too low, some cylinders not firing correctly, even stalled. Restarting was harder than cold but it worked.
