Never owned a Jag before.
Hey guys and gals.
I'm in the market for a new car and I've been looking dreamily at some X-Types and S-Types. I have very little knowledge about either one minus the engine sizes and that kind of stuff.
I currently own a miata and it's been completely unreliable ($5600 in less than a year in repairs not including consumables) and I want something more luxurious and reliable. The concern I have is that I've heard a lot of stuff about Jag's being SUPER unreliable money pits and after my miata that's the last thing I want. However, I have also heard some really good things that they are extremely solid cars etc.
I want something luxurious as I said, peppy, nimble and good for a daily commute with a bit of moderate pushing. (I'm not gonna take her to the track but I would like to enjoy the twisty roads around me) I don't want to spend more than around $7500 which in my area would get me a pretty well equipped, semi low mile (60-70k miles) X-Type if I look hard. It's usually around $5000 for a good condition X-Type around here with just over 100,000 miles as well so $2500 is gonna get me quite a bit fewer miles or a lot better trim package/performance options and what have you.
The X-Type awd would be fantastic, as would the better, albeit slightly, fuel economy, however I like the styling of the S a ton more. Fuel economy is an issue as well, I don't want to be enjoying my Jag from a far due to not being able to afford gas for her.
Do the two I'm considering have many issues, or is it all hearsay that they break down a lot and spend half the time in the shop? If I bought one with higher mileage (100,000+) would I expect a ton of issues? What are some common issues I should look for?
Would any other Jag's be better suited for my reliability needs and price? What about XJ's? Thanks!

welcome aboard JF xanimal13, great to have you here with us.
I'm biaised as I had an X type and loved it...The AWD is awesome in the twisties and in winter. If you get a good one, preferably 04 or later as mostly the issues were sorted by then. The T/C is the weak point and sealed for life is B/S......there are loads of guys here who have figured a nice fairly easy way to drain, flush and replace the oil and its deffo sumthin you'd be lookin to do if you go for the X type.
The S type is again a great car.....the STR is an awesome machine, quick and luxurious.
Either way there are some top guys, great DIY members even who have trravelled hundredss of miles to help each other out, some of the best Jag techs here on the board share their knowledge too.
My advice?
Simple - get stuck into both sections and read, read, read......ask questions of some of the real veteran members.....they'll be glad to help....then, pays your money and take your chances just like the rest of us
Hope you enjoy the site.....
Loads going on, plenty of very friendly and helpful members as well as some excellent tech advice......all good!
In the meantime I've manually upgraded you to full forum access so you can better view the site
