Hi all,

My name is Tim and I'm from Maitland, NSW, Australia. I don't yet own a Jaguar but I plan to, so I am hoping this will become my new home.

I've always been into cars, both new and classic. I've spent the past ten years restoring and building Ford Escorts, which has been fun. I'm not a purist everything-must-be-original type guy, although I can appreciate those who are.

I have gone through a range of cars, from Ford hatches and sedans to Subaru turbocharged wagons. However, I've always had a passion to buy a Jaguar and I've decided that now is the time. I'm currently driving a Mazda 3 as a cheap means to get to work while I sort out what I want to buy.

I originally wanted to buy an XJS to restore, but I am starting another university degree so I won't have as much time as I would want for that just yet. It could always be a project for later. So I am leaning towards an all wheel drive X-Type in green, probably around an 05-06 model, but I know very little about them so I may change my mind. I do like the slighter older but larger XJs, but I'm here to learn.

Here are a few of my previous rides. I've had about 16 so far so I won't bore you with all of them:

I'm a part-time photographer and enjoy car-to-car rig photography, so if the aussies get together some time for a meet-up and are interested, I'll tag along and participate.

Look forward to learning more about Jags and becoming informed before purchasing.

Regards,

Tim

Tim,

Welcome to the real world of motoring. Fun will be had, trust me.

Do a WHOLE LOT of reading on any model you may fancy, make real sure you can/will live with the quirks that they all have.

I have NO experience with the X Type, it is one model that does nothing for me, and THAT IS FOR ME, before someone flames me again HAHA.

The XJ-S is AWESOME, and once that beast is in your blood, you will be a one eyed Jag man for LIFE. The V12 is "just sooooooo sweet", and any real male MUST have at least one in his lifetime.

We had 5 at one time, and my wife constantly said that another V12 was a lot easier to handle, and cheaper, than allowing me a mistress, mmmmm, still thinking about that logic.

ENJOY, lifes too short.

It's ok, I already knew that the X-Type is one of the models that fall into the 'not everyone loves them' category hehe.

G'day Tim, welcome from another Aussie (I'm in Melbourne).

Very nice cars you have (or had). The Aust/NZ section of the forum is very good and I'd also recommend spending time in the "models" sections where you'll get heaps of opinions and advice from others around the world on the various Jag models.

You mentioned being keen on earlier XJ's. My ride is a '97 (X300) XJ6 Sport, the last of the XJ6's. Very reliable and pretty much free of the early XJ foibles whilst retaining much of the character and styling of the early models. If you're keen on a full size 4 door, an X300 can be had for around half the price (or less) of a mid 2000's X Type in Aust. IMO they are fantastic value since you get a massive amount of luxury car with a fabulous motor and trans. for not much money.

Incidentally, although I'm busily sharing my passion for the X300, I do love the X type and definitely do not join those who turn their noses up at it. In my book, for sheer style in the medium size bracket it beats Beemer 3 series / Merc C class any day. Anyhow, have fun reading up for yourself, the one thing we probably all agree on is that Jag's are like no other marque, they really do get into your blood.

Cheers,
Tony.

Hi jagent,

Thanks for the welcome. I definitely haven't ruled out the XJs, yours sounds like a good thing. I'll be sure to check it out!

I've already been spending time in the different model forums to see what sorts of experiences people are having, although I realise that the people without trouble rarely post to say they are not having any issues; only the issues get posted, but it's a good heads-up.

Cheers!
