Hello. I joined this forum because I own a 2004 Jaguar X Type 3.0 Automatic and have been reading on this forum for some time trying to fix a gearbox fault issue. It all started in a rainstorm. Yes I replaced my TCM and have sealed it. I have spent lots of money and time on the issue for months and nothing seems to fix it. I am at a loss and although I come from a long line of mechanics amd work on my own cars. I am considering going to Jagaur dealership. They want hundreds to try to diagnose. I am very sad. I love this car. My gearbox fault is, engine light, gearbox fault, stuck in what seems 4th gear when I put it in drive although sometimes I have no gearbox fault and it just really hard shifts. I have cruise control and sport available. I have removed the ECU and inspected both sides, no water damage. I now have a scratching noise from the cluster when I start and turn off the car. Seems to be an electrical nightmare I am dealing with.

Welcome to the forums Rebbecca,

Good to have you with us.

I can see you've already found your way to the X-Type forum with this question so there's no need for a link to it from me. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

Please add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also use the US Central Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/us-central-36/ to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forums.

Graham

Hello,
I'm sorry your Jaguar is giving you trouble. It's unlikely however, that any dealership will be able to help you with a car so old. They generally only want to work on stuff less than 5 or 6 years old.

You've come to the right place for help. Members in our X-type section will be Far more familiar with your car than any dealership because they deal with them every day.

I wish you success.

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

Hi Rebecca - how peculiar - I also joined this forum because of exactly the same with my 1999 V6 3 litre S type! Only using fourth in drive, and very jerky to get into reverse. Have had to drive it about 250 miles so far and luckily managed to avoid any hill start, as I don't think it will do it! (I am with GEM Assist.)

Local garage diagnostics said "torque converter fault" and "solenoid fault required gearbox rebuild", and they suggested I take it to a Jag specialist. So I drove it from Llanidloes, Mid Wales, to R and R in Solihull, who confirmed that the gearbox does need replacement. They were not hopeful of finding a good secondhand one. Searching tells me that my car's gearbox is a Ford 5R55N, fitted from 1999 to 2002, then changed to a ZF gearbox. I am now contacting automatic transmission specialists in the hope - ASR have replied to my weekend enquiry saying they will phone me.
