Default New member. Hello to all.

I have a 2003 X-type 3.0. I bought used a few months ago with 103k miles. I've put 5000 in it when recently I ran into a situation with check eng light come on, flashing at times and stay on while engine misfiring. Took a reader to it got cyl 5 misfire code. Suspected coil pack in that cylinder Proceeded with access. Found spark plug wall full of oil. Already know valve cover gaskets, that's next. II tested coil resistance and got no reading so I got new one and set of spark plugs. Noticed new plug and old one didn't match. Not comfortable this because new one has longer thread pitch. I put back original plug. Oh before I forget I was at parts store and every thing they had in their catolog showed same plug longer thread pitch. I returned the new set. After putting back together I ran it it smoked quite a bit for anout 10 min. Pretty sure some oil got in after I pulled spark plug first time. Since then it runs fine. Warning light out after removing the codes. I need help in getting correct spark plugs. I have no clue. There's a video on youtube a red 2002 x-type. That guy pull out spark plug and show up close looking like the ones in the store. That can't be right. Please help. I want to do finish this project including valve cover seals and probably rest of coil packs because I feel when one goes out others will eventually. Until I can get the right spark plugs I have to run as is. I didn't take down number on spark plug to reference.

Hello, Richard,
Flashing engine light is never good. As you bought your car Used, and you went to the Parts Store and they showed you a different spark plug, that would indicate the Previous Owner had perhaps installed the Wrong plugs at some time prior to selling the car.

Generally Parts Houses are pretty good about giving customers the Correct, Factory Recommended parts and other components unless the customer specifically orders something different. I have learned the hard way to Always use Factory Recommended parts, fluid types and viscosities, no matter who tells you they have a better idea.

There is a lot of good information on YouTube, and probably the fella you saw had it right. Yours is, after all, a Used car, and you have no idea the Previous Owner's qualifications for making parts changes.

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

Welcome to the forums Richard,

With a single cylinder misfire DTC, the first step in troubleshooting is to switch the coil with another cyclinder and see if the error code follows the change. If it does then the coil is faulty; if it doesn't you save the cost of a replacment because it's not the coil causing the fault. The spark plug type is XW4E-12405.
