I'm a new member to this forum. Could have desperately used this site through the first two Jags I've owned! Since Jag went to V8, I feel lost but this is what I have. I've got a '98 XJ8 that was running perfectly until today and now won''t start. The fuel pump is less than a year old but I don't think it's starting when I turn over the car and I'm thinking from past experiencing that my crankshaft positioning sensor is shot. Where is / are the crankshaft and/or camshaft positioning sensors located? Has anyone else had this experience? I figured to start at the crankshaft position sensor first because it's cheapest, one part, and it's been the problem on the straight six on my XJ-6 from yester-year. Anybody?

You must have a code reader to get anywhere with the service of this car. Throwing parts at it based on hunches is not the way. Take it from one who used to do that.

Can you recommend where to get a code reader that will actually work for this car but is not the Jag computer? I know that if the crankshaft sensor is "bad" there's no fire which is exactly what is happening now and has happened in the past with a different Jag. Thanks.

There is a "sticky" permanent thread on this subject. Bring it up and you will find a number of recommendations.

Quote: I test drove the XF yesterday and loved it. When I asked my car broker to look into purchase he couldn't have been more negative. He said they were loaded with problems and had terrible maintenance records. I'm a high milage driver, almost 20k per year. I really like the car, powerful and luxurious at the same time. I would love to hear XF owners opinions. Is my car broker wrong.
You sure you've posted to the right thread? Your post seems a bit off the subject of this one and you don't look like a hijacker.

Well?
I went to the relevant sections on the website and did all of the old fashioned checks I could without a code reader to confirm what the problem was and elected to send my cat back to the dealership to tell me what the problem was. Good and bad news is that the problem was the fuel pump which was replaced less than 8 mos. ago by that dealership... good news is that they stand behind the factory pump and it gets replaced with no added cost to me except the frustration of being without the car for a week! Can you believe it takes a Jaguar dealership a week to get a new fuel pump? I could have gotten it in 2 days! Needless to say, I'm going to look into a code reader that I can use for this car and skip past my local dealer for diagnostics and repairs if at all possible moving forward! Any suggestions on what code reader to get and where to get it?

Thanks to all for your help! Awesome forum!
