Default New member, long time XJ6 owner

Just found the forum and immediately joined. Have been a long term Jag owner though having bought my first XJ6 in 1979. Enjoyed it and drove it for years in spite of the infamous Lucas electrical system. Did a lot of work on it including replacing the front end after hitting the back of a Caprice station wagon in a snowstorm -- never even saw any brake lights even though it was stopped in the road. Later, I had a dropped valve that punched through one of the pistons so I overhauled it including replacing all of the pistons and rods, etc. Eventually a lifted Ford Bronco hit the rear with his big pipe bumper with the hooks sticking out which did a lot of damage. I was stopped waiting for a car to turn and saw him coming but had nowhere to go so just mashed the brake and waited. He told the investigating cop that he was going 35 mph when he hit me (speed limit was only 25)! My wife really enjoyed driving the car, especially the local fast food drive in where the teenagers ALWAYS commented on her car.

More recently, we bought a green metallic 1993 XJ6 Vanden Plas. It really drives and handles well. The clearcoat over the paint was disintegrating on the top and trunk (hood and boot) so I dropped it off with my niece's husband two weeks ago to paint just before going to Alaska for a fishing trip. Really looking forward to seeing it repainted, especially since he keeps telling me how good it is going to look. Based on his previous work that I have seen, I expect it to look like new. The interior is in really good shape except a piece of the wood near the gearshift has cracked and pulled loose from the metal underneath. Anybody have ideas on what to use to glue that back down. The door panels and rest of the interior, especially the seats, look like new - everything except the bottom carpets.

One thing I realized really quickly in going from the older Jag to the newer one is the vast increase in complexity of the electrical diagrams. The older one had like 4 - 8 1/2 x 11 pages. The FSM for the '93 has many pages that I printed out on 17 x 22 sheets that I still need a magnifying glass to be able to read the fine print! Luckily, the newer system is much improved over the older one in a lot of respects.

Guess that is enough intro. Look forward to interacting with everyone on the forum!

Welcome, cu! You sound like a DIY kind of guy. You'll really appreciate this forum. The members here can help you fix ANYTHING. Well... anything on your Jag, of course. In regards to your carpets, there's a seller on eBay that sells custom floor mats. Lots of members have bought them. I don't have a link, but if you go over to the XK8 section and search for "ebay mats embroidered" I'm sure you'll find the thread. They are good quality and cheap. And by cheap I mean $60 or $70 for custom mats that will fit your car exactly like the factory mats, plus they will embroider them with the Jag leaper or anything else you choose.
