Hello all,

New Jag owner as of this past Saturday. I purchased a 2017 Jaguar F-Type AWD in S trim. Color is Ammonite grey and it has the blacked out 20" wheels. I'm really pleased with the vehicle for a lot of reasons not the least of which was the price, nearly half what was indicated on the sticker with only 2,130 miles on it! It's also certified pre-owned. Other than a few scratches very low on the front (previous owner must have dinged a curb) the car looks, feels and smells brand new.

I'm hoping to use the car as a (somewhat) daily driver. I live in New Jersey. Winters aren't very easy on a vehicle like this.

Perhaps comically, I am purchasing a second "beater" vehicle to drive to work in inclement weather, an old but reliable Buick owned by a friend with 60,000 miles on it. I really prefer the look of the F-Type in my garage looking perfect rather than getting trashed by the winter weather, salt, etc. I figured at $800 (lol) it's a lot cheaper than swapping for winter tires.

I've owned other sports cars in the past -- I was a bit younger -- those appealed to me more at the time. I owned a Mustang Cobra, Corvette C5 and a Dodge Viper GTS. All very fun (especially the Viper) but nowhere near the build quality or overall experience I've had in the past few days with the F-Type. Hey, I'm starting to really appreciate things like a heated steering wheel, heated seats, and other luxury features! The Viper was really bare-bones. And very challenging to drive in any kind of weather.

I've always had very positive impressions of the Jaguar brand. My uncle, who was larger than life to me as a boy (championship water skier and moto-crosser) drove several Jaguars throughout my childhood, usually convertibles. I believe his last would have been an early nineties XJ.

The vehicle is a real head-turner. I hadn't quite expected that, but I don't know why. It's hard for me not to stare at it, so I don't know why others wouldn't want to as well. I just love its appearance and overall design. Great combination of power and class.

Performance is pretty good. I knew AWD (a requirement for me given winter weather here) would take some of the punch out the the V6. Certainly both the Corvette and especially the Viper GTS had better overall performance, but I suppose that's not really the point with a car in this category. V8 was a non-option for obvious reasons. I'll enjoy what this car puts out of the 3.0L.

Couple of quick questions:
  1. The one feature I really wanted but wasn't available on this particular pre-owned vehicle was the "vision" package (I think it's called.) I.e., backup camera and sensors. Hoo boy, I have been sweating bullets when I back this thing up. Is there any reasonable aftermarket alternative that isn't gimmicky and might integrate smoothly with the current electronics?
  2. Seat cover. I really don't want to walk out of the gym all sweaty and drench these lovely seats. Suggestions?
  3. Scratches/minor damage to bottom front fairings. These scratches aren't really noticeable unless you bend down and look under there, but then you'll see some raggedy edges and one scrape on the front forward facing part of the fairing. I could take a picture I suppose. Is there a cost effective way to get this repaired? It's not major enough to warrant thousands of dollars to fix, but maybe there's something cheap-ish which could be done.
Here's a couple pics of my new baby. I have to admit, it took my breath away when I saw this waiting for me at the dealer. (The main "scratch" I was talking about is visible at the very bottom of the pic in which the front of the car is featured.)

Thank you,

-Ryan

Hello, Ryan,
Winters in California aren't nearly as nasty as yours are, but I still keep my Jag garaged in all but the Nicest days in winter.
I'd say you're wise to treat your car that nicely. It'll last you a good long time that way.

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.
