Hi. My name is Alan and I'm trying to help out my elderly next door neighbor with her 1972 Jag 2+2 coupe. I am a recently retired mechanical engineer who has (mostly) enjoyed working on cars since I was a teen. The incentive for me here is that I might be able to take the car for a drive now and again, as she can only get in and out of it with great difficulty.

To date, I have simply performed some basic checks and inspections on the vehicle to assure myself it would be safe to take for a drive. One issue I've found is that the radiator overflow tank is a bit rusted up and the cap could easily pass for the original!

The question I have at the moment is whether the cap for the overflow tank should provide a seal or be vented? The existing cap appears to seal to the overflow tank mouth via a flat o-ring on the underside of the cap, but all the cars I'm familiar with do NOT use a sealed cap.

Your advice on the correct type of overflow tank cap to mount will be much appreciated!

Hello, Alan,
I haven't seen a stock radiator cap without a seal like you describe since I spent a Summer with my uncle who was a mill wright. They customarily took the seals out of the caps because the radiators on the skidding rigs were in such poor condition they leaked with the slightest pressure.

All cooling systems are pressurized in some way, but also have a pressure relief provision; doubtless yours is like that too in some way or other.

Welcome to the forum Alan,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

Follow Norri's link in post #6 to the E-Type forum for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Forum sponsor S N G Barratt are also very helpful with this sort of detail info on parts.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

Enjoy the forums.
