I've been curious about the x300 + x308 Jags for awhile, and was chatting with a nice fellow at the Portland Cars & Coffee who showed me a marketplace ad for a green 96 XJR project. Several days later I was meeting the owner and shaking hands. I'm happy to be here. Although I was not truly ready for another car in my fleet, the opportunity to take on this 96 XJR was too good to pass up.
I think of myself as a pretty competent mechanic, and I feel this car will test my limits. I hope to be up for the challenge!
Its major fault is a stuck sunroof, which I have since manually closed. The sunroof assembly is partially disassembled and missing some of its lining. I'll tinker with that some in the coming weeks. At least it probably wont rain inside now! Other areas needing attention: oil leaks, paint and bodywork, typical tune up items from sitting 2+ years. Previous owner was an enthusiast and this car has the "Andy Bracket" and possibly some steering rack spacers?.
If you haven't done so already you should add your car details to your signature to help others to help you.

I had a 1995 XJR as a daily driver for quite a few years. Great car. A real pleasure to drive. And, fundamentally, a very robust. You'd have to go out of your way to kill one.
But the ownership experience was not entirely a pleasure cruise. There were periods of choppy waters :-)
Anyhow, lots of help to be had in the X300 section. Lots of these cars on the road by DIYers. You'll be fine.
Hello, Mike,
Congratulations on your new Jaguar!
As you describe yourself as a Tinkerer, you'll get on Just Fine with an Elderly Jaguar with a few age-related problems.
Good job getting the sun roof closed.
By the way, ALL Jags leak oil, it's how they mark their territory, just like any cat.
Thanks for the warm welcome, y'all! I have driven the car around town, in what seems like its first drives in several years. I hope to get it over to Portand cars and coffee soon. The project queue is as follows, so far, I welcome any comments:
Replace Sunroof Assembly (broken armature and motor and control unit is removed currently)
Resolve Inoperable Door Locks (Lock pins do not move manually, suspect broken driver lock actuator)
Trunk is indicated as open, (switch or wiring problem)
Basic tuneup, fluid changes, Valve cover gasket and smoke test
Detail
Tires (will reinstall OE wheels)
Body and Paint work are needed, but this will be down the line
