Default Thinking about joining the club...

Hello Folks,

New here and thinking about taking the plunge into Jaguar ownership, I've got my eye on a '98 XJR
I am a car guy, and I've pulled the motor of my 1995 Nissan 300zx twinturbo in my driveway to do repairs. So I'm not afraid of maintenance, but I'm not looking to get into a car that I'll spend more time under than driving
Any words of wisdom from the group here?

Best, Barry

P.S. Here are a few pix of the Z if you're interested...

Welcome to the Forum Barry, love your desk (4th pic) lol.

You can guess that we all rate the XJR, but for good info, check out the XJR forum. Some great guys around, for advice.

Great choice on car if I do say so myself! Now, if it were me, I would get a '03 if you can find a great buy, that being said just do your research here on the forum and then decide if you want a pre '02 model. Obviously, I decided that I could deal with the issues of a pre '02, and based upon your mechanical ability, my guess is that you can as well.

A beautifully prepared engine bay, if I may say so.

Thanks Fraser, here's another if you're interested...

Well... I've been doing a bunch of reading here, and it seems as though I'll be looking for an XJ_ with a motor built after August 13, 2001. Seems the Nikasil issue was dealt with in August of 2000, and the plastic tensioner issue in August of 2001, so motors built after that date should be less prone to problems

I've found a 2003 XJ8 Sport that I'm going to take a look at. I know it won't be as powerful/fast as an XJR, but my Z should keep my need-for-speed jones fed

Barry, that engine bay is sublime, no other word for it.

I did something similar on a 1980 4.2 XJ6 in 1990. Stainless steel nuts, bolts, hose clips etc, all painted bits powdercoated; it was a picture. I suspect you must have ridden motorcycles once where the engine is the focal point.

Thanks again Fraser. As a matter of fact, I did ride motorcycles for a bit back in my youth, but I just like to keep my things nice and tidy. My vehicles aren't show winners, nor are they the fastest of their ilk, as there is always someone willing to spend more time and money on those goals than I am, but they do present well, and perform admirably when asked to do so
